AMES, Iowa – After a pair of outstanding performances across the past two days, ISU junior Andrea Maldonado and redshirt freshman Makayla Maxwell received Big 12 weekly gymnastics awards, the conference announced Tuesday morning. Maldonado was named the Big 12 Event Specialist of the Week, while Maxwell is Big 12 Co-Newcomer of the Week.
Both Cyclones are earning their first career weekly awards. Maldonado's Event Specialist honor is ISU's first in that category since Hilary Green on Feb. 26, 2018, the Cyclones' most recent conference weekly award of any kind. Maxwell is the first Cyclone to earn a Newcomer of the Week nod since current volunteer assistant coach Haylee Young did on Feb. 11, 2015.
Maldonado came to Iowa State with a big reputation in floor exercise, having been a member of Puerto Rico's National Team setup across the last five years and her performance at the FIG Apparatus World Cup in the fall earning her a spot in the Code of Points. She made her arrival in Ames known with a pair of strong performances. Friday night at Hilton vs. No. 24 West Virginia, Maldonado notched a 9.900 for her first 9.9 as a Cyclone. She went bigger Monday at No. 18 Georgia, as she fired off a 9.950 in Athens. She is the first Cyclone to go 9.950 on floor since Haylee Young at Arkansas in 2018.
Maxwell's performance on vault was a breakthrough of a different kind. Coming off a 9.750 against WVU on Friday, the Las Vegas native had one of the biggest performances by a Cyclone freshman ever on vault with her 9.950 at Georgia on Monday. Maxwell is one of just five gymnasts in the NCAA this season to go 9.950 or higher on vault.
Maxwell's winning vault marked the highest score by a Cyclone on vault since Celine Paulus went 9.950 at Missouri in 2012, and was the fourth 9.950 or better by a Cyclone freshman in program history, the other three by eight-time All-American Janet Anson.
Maldonado, Maxwell and the Cyclones are off this weekend and will begin prep for their trip to No. 1 Oklahoma on Friday, Jan. 31.
