AMES, Iowa – The Iowa State soccer team (2-4-0) fell 1-0 in a hard-fought battle against Texas (3-3-0) on Friday evening at the Cyclone Soccer Complex. The shot count was all knotted at 12-12, with the Cyclones earning multiple dangerous chances inside the 18-yard box, but Longhorn Haley Berg connected on a free kick in the 54th minute, and Iowa State was unable to equalize.
ISU sophomore goalkeeper Jordan Silkowitz had yet another strong performance for the Cardinal & Gold, making six saves on the night – her second-highest total of the season.
Turning Point of the Game
The moment of the match for Texas came in the 54th minute, courtesy of star Longhorn midfielder Haley Berg. First, the native of Celina, Texas, earned a free kick via Cyclone foul from just beyond the top of the 18-yard box to set UT up in prime position to break the 0-0 tie. Berg then slotted her free kick perfectly past the Cyclone defense and into the lower left-hand corner of the net.
The goal was Berg's second of the season, and put the Longhorns in front, 1-0. Iowa State responded well, continuing to build its offensive attack and create dangerous scoring opportunities. The Cyclones never relented, out-shooting Texas 6-5 in the final 45 minutes, but were never able to break through for a goal. Mira Emma led the way offensively for the Cyclones with four shot attempts, followed by three from Brooke Miller and two each for Taylor Bee and Courtney Powell.
Coach Speak
"In both halves, I think we created so many chances," said head coach Matt Fannon. "I think in those moments sometimes you realize that it's not your night. I feel like we've done everything right and we had the opportunity to win the game tonight, and unfortunately soccer is just a game where you can do everything right and not come out on top. The stats and the possession, none of that really matters. It's just the score line at the end, and that's what's painful about nights like tonight where we do things well against a really, really quality team and we've got to take it on the chin."
Game Notes
- Tonight's match was the fourth consecutive meeting between the Cyclones and Longhorns to be decided by one goal. Iowa State's last win in the series came in 2016 (2-0).
- Junior Brooke Miller set a new career high with three shot attempts on the night, including one on goal.
- Sophomore midfielder Mira Emma tallied a season-high four shots on the night.
- Five Cyclones played the full 90 minutes: Kenady Adams, Taylor Bee, McKenna Schultz, Mira Emma and Jordan Silkowitz
