LUBBOCK, Texas – The Iowa State soccer team (2-5-0) fell 1-0 to Texas Tech (1-3-2) on Friday evening at John Walker Soccer Complex in Lubbock. ISU starting goalkeeper Jordan Silkowitz had a strong outing, tallying eight saves to match her career high, but the Cyclones were unable to break through against a stingy Red Raider defense.
Turning Point of the Game
Iowa State's defensive effort was undone late in the first half when Texas Tech broke a 0-0 tie behind a goal from Gisselle Kozarski. In the 42nd minute, forward Kirsten Davis played a floating ball into the box from out wide to the left. Iowa State center back Taylor Bee eventually won a header, and looked to clear the ball out of danger. However, Kozarski was there to collect the carom.
The freshman forward fired a shot with her left foot, past the charging Silkowitz, and into the lower left corner of the goal to put the Red Raiders in front, 1-0. The goal was the first of Kozarski's career and would prove to be the difference in Friday evening's match.
The Cyclones were unable to equalize, despite creating several chances inside the 18-yard box in the second half. At the final whistle, the Red Raiders held a 12-4 advantage in shots.
Coach Speak
"We lacked composure on the ball tonight," said head coach Matt Fannon. "It left us chasing too much rather than imposing our game plan. We defended poorly in deep, wide areas, and overall forced things too much. But, while the performance wasn't vintage, I once again cannot fault the effort and the hunger from our women. We will bounce back."
