AMES, Iowa – The Iowa State soccer team (2-6-0) fell 2-0 to Kansas State (2-6-0) on Friday evening at the Cyclone Soccer Complex. The Cyclones out-shot the Wildcats 20-10, including a 13-4 advantage in the second half, but were unable to find the back of the net.
Kenady Adams (7) and Mira Emma (5) both set new career highs for shot attempts on a night when the Cyclones generated a multitude of opportunities in the attacking third. In addition to doubling K-State in shot attempts, the Cyclones earned eight corner kicks to K-State's one. However, star Wildcat forward Brookelynn Entz would prove to be the difference on the final score sheet, netting a pair of goals to lead K-State to the win.
Turning Point of the Game
Following a scoreless first period, the Cyclones came out of halftime with a flurry, creating multiple dangerous opportunities in the opening minutes of the second half. As was the story of the match for the Cyclones, the ball simply would not find its way into the back of the net. After the Wildcats held off the ISU attack, the visitors were able to capitalize on a chance of their own.
K-State's Shae Turner played a ball from near midfield up and over the Iowa State defense to find teammate Brookelynn Entz streaking toward the top of the box behind the back line. Entz collected the pass and placed a shot into the lower right corner of the goal to break a 0-0 tie and score what would end up being the game-winner. Entz would strike again in the 77th minute to put the Wildcats in front 2-0 and secure the K-State victory.
Despite the rapid change in momentum, the Cyclones refused to go away, searching time and again for a chance to break through. Iowa State put six shots on goal in the match, including four in the second half, but were unable to sneak one past Wildcat goalkeeper Alaina Werremeyer.
Coach Speak
"I thought we were brilliant back to front all night long and we made two mistakes," said head coach Matt Fannon. "When you look at the chances we created, teams that aren't use to winning, luck often doesn't go your way. To be honest with you, I think that's the only piece that's missing. I can't fault anybody for tonight's performance. I thought we were wonderful."
