LAWRENCE, Kan. – Senior forward Courtney Powell scored a goal with 50 seconds remaining in regulation to send Iowa State to overtime on Friday night vs. No. 12 Kansas at Rock Chalk Park. The goal, assisted by Kenady Adams, led to the Cyclones' eventual 1-1 tie against the nationally-ranked Jayhawks.
Moments of the Match
Kansas jumped out in front thanks to a goal late in the first half from Ceri Holland. The star senior pushed the ball into KU's attacking third before crossing back to her left near the top of the 18-yard box to shake free for an attempt in the 36th minute. Holland placed her shot just inches under the cross bar to secure Kansas a 1-0 lead it would take into halftime.
The Cyclones pushed time and again in the second half looking for an equalizer, doubling their three shot attempts in the first half with six in the second. With the clock wasting away, it appeared as if nothing would come of the improved attack, but the Cyclones continued to battle to the very end. With just over a minute to play, ISU goalkeeper Jordan Silkowitz made a save and the Cyclones hurried to flip the field with the seconds ticking away.
Claudia Najera collected a pass and left it for Adams as she streaked past midfield. The sophomore played a beautiful through ball for the speedy Powell with under a minute to play. Powell, a native of La Porte City, Iowa, ran onto Adams' pass just as she entered the 18-yard box racing behind the KU back line. Powell found the back of the net, putting her shot past the Jayhawk goalkeeper to tie the match with just 50 seconds showing on the clock at Rock Chalk Park.
Iowa State tallied four more shot attempts in the overtime periods, including two on goal, but were unable to come up with a game-winner. Silkowitz also made a spectacular, game-saving play in the second overtime period, stopping a four-on-none breakaway to preserve the 1-1 tie.
Coach Speak
"We've been in this game over and over this season, and somehow managed to end up on the wrong side of the score line," said head coach Matt Fannon. "So with that in mind, everyone is ecstatic with a late leveler. But honestly I'm pretty disappointed with the result, as it's another game we could've, perhaps should've won. We are doing all the right things slowly and I am very confident we will be at the other end of the league soon."
