AMES, Iowa – The Iowa State soccer team tied UNI, 0-0, in its first match of the spring on Sunday at the Cyclone Soccer Complex. The Cyclones held a 12-5 advantage in shots, but were unable to find the back of the net in the 110-minute battle vs. UNI.
Moments of the Match
Iowa State had a decided edge in the first half, and nearly broke through in the early going. What looked like a Cyclone goal was disallowed in the 12th minute, as a foul was called against UNI seconds earlier just beyond the 18-yard box. Mira Emma took the free kick and logged the first shot attempt of the day. Emma's shot was on target, but a diving save by UNI's Caitlin Richards preserved the 0-0 tie.
Emma, who registered a game-high four shot attempts, applied more pressure on the Panther back line minutes later with yet another on-target attempt. Richards was there again, making a diving save to her left.
The Cyclones held a 5-0 shot advantage after 45 minutes of play, with three of those five shots being on target.
The UNI defense continued to frustrate attempts to build Iowa State's attack in the second half. With ISU controlling possession for much of the day, the Panthers were unable to threaten often in their attacking third. Cyclone goalkeeper Jordan Silkowitz made her lone save of the day in the 54th minute on a shot by Lizzie Mewes.
Iowa State continued to press forward in both overtime periods, searching for a golden goal. The Cyclones had five combined shot attempts in the two 10-minute periods, but came away empty-handed.
Coach Speak
"UNI came to frustrate us and put everybody underneath the ball," said head coach Matt Fannon. "They had a game plan, and ultimately their game plan worked better than ours, clearly. We just didn't play very well today is the truth. I think we can make excuses all day. The lack of preparation, and these conditions being really difficult to play the brand of soccer that we want to play, unfortunately. But like I said, they're excuses. We just didn't play very well. We played with a level of panic in our game and just lacked composure. We gave the ball away too easily. We forced things that didn't need to be forced and we rushed as the game went on."
