LAWRENCE, Kansas – Sophomore midfielder Mira Emma netted two goals on Saturday afternoon as Iowa State tied Oklahoma, 2-2, in a neutral site match at KU's Rock Chalk Park. Emma's goals, both unassisted, were her first two goals of the season, helping the Cyclones rally from pair of one-score deficits.
Emma is the first Cyclone to score two goals in the same match since Sep. 20, 2015 (Koree Willer vs. Drake).
Moments of the Match
Oklahoma broke through for the first goal of the match in the 39th minute, courtesy of CeCe Cross. Following OU's second corner opportunity of the match, Cross gave the Sooners a 1-0 lead off an assist from Cameron Tharp. OU would take its 1-0 lead into the locker room at halftime.
The Cyclones equalized early in the second half on the team's first converted penalty kick of the season. In the 50th minute, Emma was taken down inside the 18-yard box, drawing a foul to earn the PK opportunity. The native of Wheaton, Illinois, stepped to the penalty spot and buried the opportunity in the back of the net, knotting the match at 1-1.
Cross would strike yet again in the 61st minute. The freshman scored off an assist by Erika Yost to put Oklahoma back in front, 2-1.
However, the Cyclones simply refused to go away, and found pay dirt once again in the 71st minute. Emma scored her second goal of the game, and of the 2020-21 season, to tie the match at 2-2.
Neither team was able to come up with a game-winner, as Cyclone goalkeeper Jordan Silkowitz made a number of saves late, including two in overtime, to prevent a Sooner golden goal.
Coach Speak
"Once again we worked incredibly hard and moved forward," said head coach Matt Fannon. "We made poor mistakes for both their goals so it is easy to identify the areas we need to improve. I am really proud of the way we fought back from a goal down twice, but ultimately we need to get to a place where we are winning these matches."
