AMES, Iowa – The Iowa State soccer team battled Kansas for 110 minutes on Saturday at the Cyclone Soccer Complex, but ultimately had to settle for a 1-1 draw. Sophomore midfielder Mira Emma scored her third goal in the past two matches to highlight a spirited effort from a shorthanded ISU side.
Moments of the Match
The Cyclones held a 13-6 advantage in shots on Saturday afternoon against the Jayhawks, and it was on display from the outset. Iowa State had four of the game's first five attempts, and parlayed the momentum into a 1-0 advantage. In the 38th minute, Emma won a header at the top of the box and found teammate Tavin Hays. Hays was quick to return a pass to Emma, who took a one-timer with her left foot and found the lower left corner of the net for a goal.
It was the team-leading third goal of the season for the native of Wheaton, Illinois, all of which have come in the past two matches. It was Hays' second assist of the 2020-21 campaign, tied for the team lead.
Iowa State would take its 1-0 lead, and momentum, into the locker room at halftime.
The Jayhawks came up with an answer in the 57th minute. Moira Kelley dribbled into the attacking third out wide to the left, and played a cross into the heart of the 18-yard box, finding the feet of Rylan Childers. Childers took a touch and buried the opportunity, leaving Iowa State goalkeeper Jordan Silkowitz no chance to make a save.
Kenady Adams nearly came up with a spectacular game-winner in the 90th minute, putting a rocket on frame, but KU goalkeeper Sarah Peters made a diving save to send the match to overtime. Each side registered two shots during the overtime, but Iowa State and Kansas would settle for a 1-1 draw for the second time this season.
Coach Speak
"I think we were great today," said head coach Matt Fannon. "I think we played really well and stuck to the game plan. We've asked our women to play with a bit more composure and believe in themselves when we've got the ball and try to play the way that we've asked, and we did a really good job of that today. Kansas is a really, really good team and for us to dominate them in the way that we did today is great. I think it shows where we're going and what we're trying to do."
Asked of the effort his team gave, in which eight players were on the pitch for 105+ minutes of action, Fannon spoke glowingly of the Cyclones' resolve.
"It's something that I'm not sure I believed was possible," Fannon said. "The way we want to play, you just can't play with the numbers that we have. We ask for such intensity, it's really vital that we have the ability to rotate and we don't right now. Regardless, you can see people are dead on their feet and they give absolutely everything they've got. Everything. Couldn't be more proud of that."
