AMES, Iowa – Iowa State and Creighton played to a 0-0 draw on Sunday afternoon at the Cyclone Soccer Complex. It was the 2020-21 home finale for the Cyclones, who have one regular season match remaining on their spring slate.
How It Happened
Iowa State did a good job early in Sunday's match of getting to the end line to earn set piece opportunities. The Cyclones earned three corners in the first 15 minutes of the match, but came away empty-handed. For the game, Iowa State out-cornered Creighton, 9-2.
The Bluejays' strongest stretch of play came late in the first half, with Creighton tallying the final five shot attempts of the period. In the 38th minute, Daphne Nierop had CU's lone on-target shot attempt of the day, which was saved by Cyclone goalkeeper Jordan Silkowitz. Freshman Hannah Shaw logged ISU's lone shot on goal in the first half, forcing a diving save in the 30th minute.
The second half was controlled thoroughly by the Cyclones, as Iowa State out-shot Creighton 6-2 after the intermission. Tavin Hays and freshman Sydney Thomas both tested Bluejay goalkeeper Mikayla Grocki, who finished the day with three saves.
Iowa State remained aggressive until the final whistle, with one of its best chances coming late in regulation. In the 84th minute, Lauren Holleran collected a pass in the middle of the 18-yard box for a promising chance, but her shot sailed just high.
Coach Speak
"Right now we're in a place where we're creating a decent amount of chances," said head coach Matt Fannon. "We're not putting them away, which is a similar story to the fall, but we're fitting the game model a bit better. We are understanding how to play the game in a way that makes us feel like we're good enough to dominate."
"We're working on putting the ball in the back of the net. We do such a good job of being the better team in almost every game, yet we haven't done that often enough. We've worked on that with our women so much. It's not always a lack of quality, sometimes it's a lack of belief. The problem is, the only way you can believe that you can score goals is scoring goals. One day, the floodgates are going to open. Once we've had that day, we're going to feel really good moving forward."
Game Notes
- Four Cyclones played the full 90 minutes: Taylor Bee, Mira Emma, McKenna Schultz and Jordan Silkowitz.
- Freshman Sydney Thomas, who joined the Cyclones at the start of the spring semester, saw her first action. The native of Henderson, Nev., played 15 minutes, tallying one shot on goal.
