Hays Goal Propels Cyclones Past Kansas State
04.10.2021 | Soccer
MANHATTAN, Kan. – Senior Tavin Hays scored the game-winning goal to lift Iowa State to a 1-0 victory over Kansas State in the Cyclones' 2020-21 regular season finale on Saturday at Buser Family Park.
How It Happened
A slow start for the Cyclones allowed Kansas State to register the game's first three shot attempts less than 10 minutes into the match. However, it was all Cyclones from that point forward, with Hays providing the highlight of the match in the 13th minute.
Freshman defender Olivia Edwards helped create the opportunity, threading a pass between a pair of Wildcat defenders to get Hays the ball at the top of the 18-yard box. The senior charged toward goal and unleashed a shot that deflected off the Wildcat goalkeeper while remaining on target.
K-State defender Shannon Dukes raced to beat the ball to the goal-line and looked as if she would clear it, denying the Cyclones their opportunity. Hays, however, would not be denied. The Cyclone senior volleyed Dukes' attempted clearance into the back of the net for what would prove to be the game-winning goal.
The Cyclones would take their 1-0 lead into intermission after a relatively even first half in which each team's goalkeeper was credited with three saves.
Iowa State took control of the match in the second half. ISU allowed just one K-State shot attempt in the game's final 45 minutes – resulting in a terrific save by Jordan Silkowitz to push the ball over the cross bar.
In total, the Cyclones enjoyed a 12-7 advantage in shot attempts in the match, while also out-cornering Kansas State 5-2.
Coach Speak
"After a slow start, we really took control of the game," said head coach Matt Fannon. "In the second half, we did a great job of following the game plan and managed the game fantastically. It was a deserved result."
