AMES, Iowa – The Iowa State men's basketball team (1-1, 0-0 Big 12) rallied in the second half, but fell to South Dakota State (2-2, 0-0 Summit), 71-68. The Cyclones erased a 15-point deficit in the final 10 minutes of the game, but ultimately fell to the Jackrabbits.
Senior Solomon Young turned in a great performance for the Cardinal and Gold. The Sacramento, Calif., native racked up 24 points on 11-17 shooting from the floor. The big man pulled own five boards, blocked one shot and nabbed a steal on the defensive end.
How It Happened
SDSU jumped out to an early 14-7 lead to open the game. The Jackrabbits started the game 6-10 from the field, including 2-4 from deep. That, coupled with ISU's cold start from the field, 3-10 and 1-7 from three, gave SDSU an early advantage.
At the break, the Cyclones trailed the Jackrabbits, 39-27. SDSU stayed hot to close out the first half, shooting 15-25 and 5-11 from behind the arc. Javan Johnson turned in a solid first-half performance, pouring in nine points, three rebounds and two assists in the first stanza.
The Cyclones went on a series of runs in the second half, cutting the Jackrabbit lead to single digits on a number of occasions. ISU pieced together a 6-0 run just before the under four-minute timeout, trimming the lead to 61-54. Young's second-half offense kept the Cyclones in the contest, tallying 16 of his 24 points in the second half.
Out of the final media timeout, a Young jumper brought the score to 65-59, SDSU's smallest lead since the first half. After the Cyclone defense forced a shot-clock violation, Jalen Coleman-Lands banged home a three, making it a one possession game (65-62) with 2:01 to play.
With 0:22 to play, Johnson went to the line and knocked down two free throws, pulling the Cyclones within one, 67-66. The Jackrabbits hit their free throws down the stretch, and came away with a 71-68 victory.
Next Up
The Cyclones will turn around and host DePaul on Sunday, Dec. 6 in the Big 12/Big East Battle. That game with the Blue Demons is set to tip at 5 p.m. on ESPNU.
