IRVING, Texas – The Big 12 Conference named 14 Iowa State soccer student-athletes to the Academic All-Big 12 Teams on Thursday. The Cyclones had 10 honorees named to the Academic All-Big 12 First Team, and four on the second team.
Iowa State's 14 honorees are tied for third-most in the conference, and match the program's most selections since 2012, when a school-record 18 Cyclones were honored by the league.
"From our start here at Iowa State we have driven home the importance of succeeding at every aspect of life," said head coach Matt Fannon. "Academics are such a vital part of a student-athlete's journey, and our women have committed to putting the same effort into the classroom as they do on the field. We are very proud of them for this."
First team recipients are Kenady Adams, Taylor Bee, Mira Emma, Kassi Ginther, Lauren Holleran, Brooke Miller, Claudia Najera, Jordan Silkowitz, Eva Steckelberg and Olivia Wee. Tavin Hays, Courtney Powell, McKenna Schultz and Abbey Van Wyngarden were second team honorees.
Ginther, a forward from Lee's Summit, Mo., is now a three-time member of the Academic All-Big 12 First Team. Fellow senior McKenna Schultz also earned her third career Academic All-Big 12 selection on the second team. This is the second Academic All-Big 12 honor for Adams, Bee, Hays, Miller and Powell.
First team members consist of those who have maintained a 3.20 or better GPA while the second team selections hold a 3.00 to 3.19 GPA.
To qualify, student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher either cumulative or the two previous semesters and must have participated in 20 percent of their team's scheduled contests. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are also eligible.
