AMES, Iowa – The Iowa State track and field teams racked up some fast times on the first day of the Iowa State Classic at Harry Hoak Track inside the Lied Recreation Center. The Cyclones picked up four wins on the first day of competition.
Cailie Logue continued to show her high level in the women's 5,000-meter run invite, finishing third with a time of 15:51.10. Logue, who missed her PR of 15:50.15 run in Boston back in December, went under 16 minutes for the second time in her career at 5K.
All three of ISU's women's 3,000-meter runners went to personal bests. Two weeks after lowering her 3K PR for the first time in five years, Abby Caldwell lowered it again, taking eighth in the invite second of the 3,000m. In the open sections, Winrose Chesang had the fastest on her first run on Harry Hoak Track as a Cyclone, winning Section 2 in 9:41.10, dropping 15 seconds from her PR run in Washington two weeks ago. In her 3,000m debut, Madelynn Hill clocked in at 9:48.70.
In the third section of the men's 3,000m, Gable Sieperda used a big finish to chop over 10 seconds off his personal best, clocking in at 8:19.50.
In the afternoon session, Iowa State picked up three event wins. Roshon Roomes led a strong ISU effort in the 400-meter dash, with three Cyclones in the top-five led by Roomes' 47.44. Sophomore Gage Clay stunned the crowd and his teammates with a personal best of nearly one second, finishing fourth in 48.25. Cebastian Gentil was fifth in 48.27.
The Cyclone women saw Erika Furbeck pick up another win in the women's long jump, with her first jump of the day being her best and the winning effort at 19-9 1/2 (6.03m). Bria Barnes picked up a victory for the Cyclones as well, holding off Tulsa's Jaidah McCallon by 0.17 seconds in the 600-yard run in 1:25.66. Zakiyah Amos notched another personal best in the 400-meter dash, finishing fourth in 55.15 and moving up to No. 5 in ISU history in the event.
USATF Indoor National Championships
Meanwhile in Albuquerque, Vlad Pavlenko and Eric Fogltanz took part in the USATF Indoor National Championships, with both unable to compete for the Cyclones during indoor season, having exhausted their eligibility.
Fogltanz earned a second run and will compete again in tomorrow's 'B' final of the 400-meter dash at 3:05 p.m. Central, which will be aired on NBC. Fogltanz finished fourth in his heat in 46.90, but with place not mattering for advancement, his time survived the four heats to earn a second run.
Pavlenko had a strong day, finishing seventh in the men's weight throw with a best toss of 70-10 (21.59m). The redshirt senior showed strong consistency across all of his throws, not committing any fouls and having five of six go over 21 meters.
