AMES, Iowa – Edwin Kurgat set his fourth school record of the indoor season to lead ISU at the 2020 Iowa State Classic on Saturday at the Harry Hoak Track inside the Lied Recreation Athletics Center. Kurgat became the sixth Cyclone in program history to go under four minutes in the mile, winning in a record-time of 3:58.62.
Kurgat has done it all for the No. 8 Cyclone men this season, and he added another slot on the ISU record board with his name. With former ISU national champion Edward Kemboi doing the pacing, they went through the quarter in 58.12 and the 1/2 mile at 1:59.16. After a 3:00.81 3/4-mile split, Kurgat stepped up and did the rest, finishing his final 250 meters in 58.62 to get the win and the new school record.
Kurgat got a school record for a third-straight week, running on the DMR at the Indiana Relays two weeks ago and the 3,000m run at the Millrose Games last weekend. He got the 5K school record in Boston back in December. The previous school record was run by David Rotich in 2006 at an NCAA Qualifier meet in 3:59.50. He is the fifth Cyclone to go under four-minutes indoor and sixth overall across indoors and outdoors. At the time of publication, Kurgat is No. 10 in NCAA Division I in the mile this season.
Festus Lagat solidified his spot at No. 2 on the DI men's 800-meter list as he raced to a personal best in 1:47.50 to win. Lagat went 51.49 in his first 400 and then closed in 56.02 for the final 400.
The Cyclone women got an event win from Jalaiya Bartley in the triple jump, with the junior's winning leap coming in at 38-9 3/4 (11.83m). Katarina Vlahovic just missed out on a victory in the 60-meter hurdles, finishing second by just 0.01 seconds in 8.44.
USATF Indoor National Championships
In Albuquerque, Eric Fogltanz made the most of his second run on Saturday at the USATF Indoor National Championships, as he raced to a third-place bronze-medal finish in a personal best 46.40. The 'B' final of the 400-meter dash proved to be the fast heat, as despite finishing third in his heat, it was enough to take a spot on the podium.
That time is a personal best by over three-tenths indoors, with his previous best being a 46.71 at the 2017 Big 12 Indoor Championships. Fogltanz has one season of outdoor eligibility remaining for the Cyclones.
