Maldonado Earns Big 12 Newcomer Of The Week

AMES, Iowa – Iowa State junior Andrea Maldonado has been named Big 12 Newcomer of the Week, claiming a Big 12 weekly for the third-consecutive week. Maldonado earned a fourth 9.950 on floor to win the event title against Iowa, doing so in back-to-back meets.

Maldonado's award is her second Newcomer of the Week title of 2020 and is her fifth Big 12 weekly honor. She has been the Cyclones' top performer on floor this season, racking up the four 9.950s, a 9.925 and a pair of 9.900s to total a 9.935 NQS that is tied for seventh in the nation. A 9.850 on vault also helped Maldonado's case for Newcomer of the Week.

The junior claimed her first Newcomer of the Week award after earning her second 9.950 of the season at Florida, while also debuting on vault in that meet with a 9.850. She claimed her second award with the same pair of scores on the same events. Maldonado's five Big 12 weekly awards are the most by a Cyclone in a single season, with her two Newcomer of the Week awards pairing with three Event Specialist of the Week wins.

Maldonado and the No. 20 Cyclones will honor their seniors following Friday's meet against Air Force. The meet will begin at Hilton Coliseum starting at 6:30 p.m.
