IRVING, Texas – Following a thrilling 2-1 double overtime victory over Baylor, the Iowa State soccer program had two players earn Big 12 weekly honors on Tuesday. Sophomore Jordan Silkowitz was named the Big 12 Goalkeeper of the Week, while newcomer Olivia Edwards was honored as the league's Freshman of the Week. It is the first career Big 12 weekly award for both honorees.
Silkowitz, a native of Fairfax, Va., was phenomenal between the posts on Friday night vs. BU. She tallied a career-high eight saves on the night to fend off an aggressive Bear offensive attack. She is the first Cyclone goalkeeper to earn weekly honors from the conference since September 6, 2016 (Lindsey Hendon).
Edwards scored the game-winning, golden goal in the second overtime period to clinch Iowa State's first Big 12 win since October 25, 2018 (vs. Kansas State). The native of Irvine, Calif., volleyed a header into the back of the net in the 104th minute, assisted by Kassi Ginther and Mira Emma. The game-winner vs. Baylor was not only her first goal as a Cyclone, it was also the first shot attempt of her career. Edwards is the first Cyclone to be named Big 12 Freshman of the Week since September 17, 2019 (Mira Emma).
Tuesday marks the third time in school history that multiple Cyclones have received Big 12 weekly honors in the same week, and the first such instance since August 25, 2015 (Haley Albert – Offensive Player of the Week, Lindsey Hendon – Defensive Player of the Week).
The Cyclones are back in action this Friday when they take on TCU at 7 p.m. in Fort Worth, Texas. The match will be broadcast live on Big 12 Now on ESPN+.
