AMES, Iowa – Iowa State (13-7, 5-4 Big 12) started off a big weekend series against West Virginia (13-7, 3-6 Big 12) with a 3-1 (25-21, 25-20, 21-25, 26-24) win Saturday afternoon at Hilton Coliseum. The Cyclone defense stepped up with 11.0 blocks to help as Cyclone offense that struggled to .175 hitting, never hitting over .200 in any set.
Leading the ISU attack was Eleanor Holthaus with 17 kills, while Candelaria Herrera had 13 kills at .355 hitting. Herrera and Alexis Engelbrecht led the Cyclone block with five blocks each. Marija Popovic celebrated her return to the ISU lineup with 27 digs, while Brooke Andersen notched 17 and Allie Petry had a career-best 15. Jaden Newsome had a double-double of 41 assists and 10 digs, while also adding seven kills, three aces and three blocks.
Set One: Iowa State 25 West Virginia 21
West Virginia won the first point of the match and was able to hold a lead for the majority of the frame. The Mountaineers were ahead 9-5, but ISU bounced back to tie it at 10-10. WVU was able to build a three-point edge at 15-12 but Iowa State responded again to tie at 16-16 on a Kenzie Mantz kill. The set finally went ISU's way in the latter stages. Annie Hatch and Candelaria Herrera combined for a stuff of to put Iowa State ahead for the first time all afternoon. Herrera and Eleanor Holthaus combined for a block of their own at 24-21 to bring up set point, which was converted on first asking when Athena Ardilla fired long at 25-21.
Set Two: Iowa State 25 West Virginia 20
Iowa State got the first four points of the set, two coming via Alexis Engelbrecht kills, but WVU quickly fought back to tie it at 6-6. ISU stayed ahead and worked back ahead by four when Engelbrecht and Jaden Newsome combined for a block at 12-8, but WVU went on a 4-0 run to tie it again at 12-12. WVU moved ahead for the first time in the set at 15-14, but ISU fought back with a 5-0 run capped by a Popovic ace to move ahead for good at 19-15. Addi Heidemann came off the bench for a crucial 3-0 serving run which included an ace of her own to make it 22-17. ISU made it 2-0 when Newsome tipped to the back-corner at 25-20.
Set Three: West Virginia 25 Iowa State 21
The visitors took advantage of some ISU errors to move ahead 7-4 in the set, but the Cyclone block stepped up to get back in the set with Engelbrecht and Holthaus combining for a stuff of Kristin Lux at 8-8. WVU was able to hang on and not allow the Cyclones ahead briefly, but ISU finally got its first lead of the set when Holthaus killed at 17-16. Herrera killed to tie the set at 21-21, but WVU got the final four points of the set, getting two kills from Adrian Ell to move ahead again, and Ardila killing to close the set 25-21 in favor of WVU.
Set Four: Iowa State 26 West Virginia 24
A 5-0 run powered by two combined stuffs from Engelbrecht and Annie Hatch helped ISU open a 6-2 lead. The Mountaineers got it tied again at 7-7, but Heidemann again came off the bench for a strong serving run which helped ISU re-establish its lead at 13-8. However, WVU used a trio of 3-0 runs to erase the deficit and move ahead by 20-16 on an Ell kill. However, Popovic went behind the service line to rattle off a 4-0 run to tie the set again. WVU did get to set point at 24-23 after Briana Lynch killed, but ISU held it off and brought up their own chance to end it at 25-24, which Newsome did with a dump at 26-24.

Candelaria Herrera. ISU's star middle was able to continue to find the floor even as WVU game-planned around her. The Argentinian finished with 13 kills at .355 hitting, while also leading ISU with five block assists on the day.
