AMES, Iowa – The 17th-ranked Iowa State Cyclones opened the second half on a 14-3 run, cruising to a 73-53 victory over the Iowa Hawkeyes in the Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Series Thursday night in front of a sold-out crowd at Hilton Coliseum.
Iowa State improved to 9-0 on the year, as head coach T.J. Otzelberger became the second coach in school history to start his career at Iowa State 9-0. It is the fourth time in school history the Cyclones have started a year 9-0. Iowa State improved to 7-2 against Iowa as an unbeaten team. The 20-point victory was the largest by the Cyclones against Iowa in the 75-game history of the series.
Izaiah Brockington led the Cyclones with 29 points and 10 rebounds, recording his fourth double-double of the season. Tyrese Hunter finished with 11 points and a season-high eight rebounds, while dishing out six assists. Caleb Grill added a season-high five assists. Iowa State had a 50-32 advantage in rebounds. Keegan Murray, the nation's leading scorer at 23.1 points per game, was held to nine points on 4-of-17 shooting after missing his first 10 shot attempts.
With Iowa leading 17-16 midway through the first half, the Cyclones went on a 15-2 run to take a 31-17 lead. A jumper by Brockington gave Iowa State its largest lead of the half at 12 with his 12th point of the half. A layup by Brockington with :20 left in the half gave the Cyclones a 38-26 lead. Brockington had 17 points in the opening 20 minutes, as he was perfect on all seven attempts from the field.
The Cyclones opened the second half on a 7-0 run, pushing the lead to 19 before the Hawkeyes could get a bucket. Iowa State took its largest lead of the game with 12:55 to play, as a 3-pointer by Tre Jackson put the Cyclones ahead 55-31. Iowa would cut the lead to 15 with 8:31 to play but couldn't get any closer.
Iowa entered the game one of four schools in the country averaging 90 points or more per game, as they were held to a season-low 53 points. The Cyclone defense forced the Hawkeyes into 27 percent shooting, the best defensive performance of the year. Iowa State is 43-0 all-time at home when holding the opponent to less than 30 percent shooting.
The Cyclones return to action on Sunday, hosting Jackson State at Noon at Hilton Coliseum. The game will be available on Big 12 Now on ESPN+.
