MILWAUKEE, Wisconsin – The Iowa State volleyball season resumed on Friday victoriously as the Cyclones (6-9, 5-9 Big 12) swept Saint Louis (5-6, 4-1 A-10) 3-0 (25-16, 25-16, 25-21) Friday afternoon at the Al McGuire Center.
In her first career start, in place for the injured Brooke Andersen, Kenzie Mantz was outstanding, notching a career-high 11 kills at .500 hitting to lead an ISU attack which hit .316 as a team. Eleanor Holthaus had nine kills and led the back row with six digs, while Avery Rhodes had eight kills.
Set One: Iowa State 25 Saint Louis 16
Iowa State took control immediately, running the first six points of the match, two via aces by Annie Hatch. The Cyclones continued to dominate and control first-set proceedings, running the lead to eight at 13-5 when Piper Mauck and Avery Rhodes combined for a block. The Iowa State defense held the Billikens to .000 hitting in the frame and were also aided by seven SLU service errors. The last of those service errors, by Emily Day, gave ISU the first 25-16.
Set Two: Iowa State 25 Saint Louis 16
Iowa State again took control from the start, claiming the first four points of the set, a run capped by a Mauck ace. SLU kept ISU within range for a little bit before ISU fired up a 5-1 run, Mauck calling her own number for a pair of kills twice to make it 13-7. Iowa State's offense stepped up in the second, as the Cyclones fired .375 as a team and claimed the final three points of the frame to win it 25-16.
Set Three: Iowa State 25 Saint Louis 21
For the first time all day Iowa State was not able to break out to a big lead before Saint Louis got on the board. However, the Cyclones found their gap with a 4-0 run capped by a block from Hatch and Abby Greiman to move ahead 10-5. The lead got to six at 14-8 before Saint Louis rallied with an 8-2 run to tie it up at 16-16, but Kenzie Mantz killed off the block to restore the ISU advantage. Iowa State got big aces from Izzy Enna and Holthaus to build the edge up enough where the Cyclones could complete the sweep. Iowa State won the match when Hatch ended a long rally with a kill at 25-21.
Player of the Match
Kenzie Mantz. Her first start as a Cyclone did not phase the sophomore, as Mantz notched a career-best 11 kills at .500 hitting to lead the Iowa State attack.
