MILWAUKEE, Wisconsin – No. 24 Marquette (8-2, 2-0 Big East) handed Iowa State (6-10, 5-9 Big 12) its first loss of the spring as the Cyclones fell 3-0 (25-15, 25-19, 29-27) Saturday afternoon at the Al McGuire Center.
The Iowa State attack struggled to .155 hitting, while the Golden Eagles put up a .357 hitting clip for the match. In defeat, ISU was led by Eleanor Holthaus's 10 kills, while Annie Hatch had eight. Piper Mauck led the defense with a double-double of 23 assists and 10 digs.
Set One: Marquette 25 Iowa State 15
Piper Mauck aced to put the Cyclones ahead 2-1, but the Golden Eagles surged ahead on the back of a 7-0 run to move ahead 8-2. Libero Taylor Baranski, making her second career start in the opposite jersey, fired off a tough 4-0 run from behind the line which included her first two career aces to help tie it back up at 9-9. Marquette rolled back ahead with a 7-1 run that brought its advantage back to six at 17-11. The Cyclone attack struggled, hitting .000 in the first while MU rolled its way to .414 hitting. The Golden Eagles moved ahead 1-0 on a Kenzie Mantz attack error at 25-15.
Set Two: Marquette 25 Iowa State 19
Marquette got some early breathing room with a 3-0 run to get ahead 9-5, but Iowa State was able to battle back, with Baranski's serve and Piper Mauck's block proving effective to help tie the set at 9-9. Iowa State held tough, but was unable to find the breakthrough to get ahead. MU went on a 3-0 run to get ahead by five at 21-16 and took it from there. Marquette hit .388 in the set and moved ahead 2-0 in the match on a block from MU's Savannah Rennie and Hope Werch at 25-19.
Set Three: Marquette 29 Iowa State 27
Iowa State once again was able to close out on an early Marquette lead to tie it at 9-9, and finally the Cyclones were able to battle in front with an Annie Hatch kill at 13-12. MU spring a 3-0 run to tie it at 16-16, but consecutive Iowa State blocks pushed ISU back ahead 18-16. The teams got tied back up at 19, 20 and 21 before the Golden Eagles snuck back ahead 22-21 when Hatch was denied by Rennie and Werch. MU got to set point at 24-22, but Hatch killed to tie it again at 24s and bonus volleyball. ISU held off two more Marquette set points and MU held off a Cyclone set point to get to 27-27, but Marquette finally put it away with Holthaus getting denied by Rennie and Taylor Wolf at 29-27.
