CHICAGO – Iowa State (6-11, 5-9 Big 12) fell to DePaul (5-5, 3-5 Big East) 3-2 (25-23, 20-25, 26-24, 20-25, 15-9) Friday afternoon at McGrath-Phillips Arena. Despite out-hitting the Blue Demons by 36 points (.227-to-.191), the Cyclones struggled behind the service line with 13 service errors, while DePaul battled well to keep the ball off the floor, out-digging ISU 63-to-59.
Leading ISU in defeat was 14-kill efforts from Kenzie Mantz and Avery Rhodes, Mantz setting her new career high which she got at .321 hitting, while Rhodes matched her career-high and hit .417. Eleanor Holthaus (12 kills, 12 digs) and Piper Mauck (52 assists, 11 digs) both had double-doubles, and Taylor Baranski just missed out on her career-high with 14 digs to lead the back-row.
Set One: DePaul 25 Iowa State 23
Kenzie Mantz got off to a strong start, getting three kills on her first three swings and a block to help push Iowa State ahead 9-6. While the Blue Demons were able to hang tough and keep ISU within arm's reach, they continued to be their own worst enemy, committing five attack errors with only one ISU block among them. A Piper Mauck set went out of play to tie it at 16-16, but ISU quickly got its lead back with Kate Shannon acing at 18-16. Iowa State got up 25-23, but did not score again, as the Blue Demons got the final four points of the set, with Annie Hatch and Eleanor Holthaus firing wide to end the frame.
Set Two: Iowa State 25 DePaul 20
A strong start to the set, with Iowa State getting the first four points of the set, was wiped out by the Blue Demons as back-to-back hitting errors from Mantz got DePaul ahead 7-6. Iowa State clawed back ahead and were eventually able to work their way ahead by three at 13-10 on a Hatch kill. DePaul got within one at 14-13, but Kate Shannon went behind the service line and caused DePaul problems, going on a 4-0 run with two aces to move ISU ahead 18-13. That was enough room for ISU this time, as the Cyclones hit .407 as a team, with Mantz killing to give the visitors the second 25-20 and tie the match.
Set Three: DePaul 26 Iowa State 24
An early 4-0 run, featuring a first career ace for Avery Rhodes, pushed the Cyclones ahead 4-2. Once again, DePaul hung tough, but Rhodes stepped up again with a kill and a block to push the visitors ahead 10-6. However, the Blue Demons would not go away and tied it back up at 12-12 and eventually moved ahead at 17-16 when Abby Greiman misfired. Iowa State worked its way back ahead, with Hatch killing to make it 20-19, but DPU ran off three-straight to move back ahead 22-20. The Cyclones battled back to tie at 22s and 23s and ISU got to set point first at 24-23 after Allison Dennemann mis-timed a back-row attack. However, ISU could not cash in and the Blue Demons took advantage, with Dennemann killing to bring up set point and Greiman missing on her shot to give it to DePaul 26-24.
Set Four: Iowa State 25 DePaul 20
The Cyclones got a 3-0 run, with Greiman leading the way with a block and a kill, to push ISU ahead 7-5. Another tight set between the two teams played out, with Iowa State giving themselves some breathing room with a 3-0 via kills from Rhodes, Holthaus and Piper Mauck to make it 15-11. The Iowa State offense was strong again, hitting .234 for the set, while the defense had a strong performance as well to hold the Blue Demons to .190 hitting for the frame. Greiman killed to ensure a fifth set at 25-20.
Set Five: DePaul 15 Iowa State 9
DePaul scored the first three points of the set and got ahead 7-2, at which point Iowa State utilized both of its timeouts in the fifth. There was no path back for Iowa State, as the Blue Demons hit .375 as a team along with recording a pair of service aces in the set. DePaul wrapped up the match when Avarie Evans-Allen killed at 15-9.
