CHICAGO – Iowa State (6-12, 5-9 Big 12) was unable to cash in on some early momentum as the Cyclones fell to DePaul (6-5, 3-5 Big East) 3-1 (24-26, 26-24, 25-23, 25-22) Saturday afternoon at McGrath-Phillips Arena.
The Cyclones made a dramatic comeback to take set one, coming from 22-15 down. However, DePaul pulled off a big comeback of its own in the second set and was able to ride that momentum for the rest of the match. In defeat, the Cyclone attack was led by Eleanor Holthaus' 14 kills, while Annie Hatch had 13 and Kenzie Mantz 11. Hatch got her first career double-double with a career-best 15 digs, while Piper Mauck had a double-double of 47 assists and 11 digs. Returning to the libero jersey, Izzy Enna notched 22 digs, while Taylor Baranski had 13.
Set One: Iowa State 26 DePaul 24
Iowa State's strong start of a 5-1 lead was quickly wiped away by a 4-0 DePaul run to even the set back up. The Blue Demons moved ahead for the first time at 9-8, and got ahead by two at 14-12 on a Jill Pressly ace. After Avery Rhodes tied it with a kill at 14-14, DePaul claimed eight the next nine contested points to put Iowa State in a 22-15 hole. Strong serving cameos by Kate Shannon and Piper Mauck helped bring ISU within two, which then saw the Cyclones fight off two set points to force bonus volleyball. DePaul was unable to take its chances, with ISU getting the final three points via DPU hitting errors, the last into the net by Jill Pressly, to take the first 26-24.
Set Two: DePaul 26 Iowa State 24
The momentum briefly carried for ISU into the second, with the visitors getting the first three points of the second. DePaul composed itself and went on a 4-0 run to move ahead 8-6, but ISU responded to tie it again at 11-11 and moved ahead by two at 14-12 after consecutive combo blocks by Abby Greiman and Kenzie Mantz. The Cyclones built the advantage to five at 19-14, but put themselves in a very similar situation to DePaul in the first, unable to convert two set points which led to some bonus volleyball. DePaul gave ISU a taste of its own medicine, as the Cyclones were called for a handling error to give the hosts the second 26-24.
Set Three: DePaul 25 Iowa State 23
DePaul got some breathing room early, taking advantage of some Iowa State errors to move ahead 8-5. A Christy Johnson-Lynch timeout did not help things, as consecutive aces to push the Blue Demon lead to five at 11-6. The Cyclones worked their way back into the set, with consecutive aces by Holthaus tying the set at 14-14. Consecutive handling errors by the Blue Demons put ISU back in front at 16-15, but the DePaul lead was restored at 18-16. DePaul moved ahead by three at 22-19 but ISU responded with a 3-0 run of its own owing to a pair of Rhodes kills to tie at 22-22. However, the hosts got to set point first at 24-22, this time the Blue Demons were able to hold as Rhodes fired wide on the slide at 25-23.
Set Four: DePaul 25 Iowa State 22
An even start to the fourth set was broken open by the hosts, as DePaul went on a 3-0 run to move ahead 12-9. Iowa State battled back to tie it at 13-13 on a Mauck ace, but the Blue Demons responded with another 3-0 room to restore the breathing room at 16-13. This time there was no path back for ISU, as the Blue Demons hit .271 as a team in the fourth while the visitors were restricted to .095 hitting in the set. DePaul closed out the match when Hatch's shot went long at 25-22.
