AMES, Iowa – Iowa State (7-12, 5-9 Big 12) picked up a 3-1 (25-19, 25-22, 23-25, 25-19) win over Wayne State Friday afternoon at Hilton Coliseum. The Cyclones, down four student-athletes win injuries, took the first two sets before WSC battled back in the third to extend the match, but ISU went on a big mid-set run to close out the match victorious.
Eleanor Holthaus matched her career-high with 22 kills, which she got at .309 hitting, and was joined in double figures by Annie Hatch (13) and Kenzie Mantz (12). Hatch also got a double-double with a career-best 24 digs, which matched Cyclone libero Izzy Enna's 24. Holthaus (13 digs) Piper Mauck also recorded a double-doubles, with Match notching 50 assists and 13 digs.
Set One: Iowa State 25 Wayne State 19
Iowa State went on an early 6-0 run on the back of Taylor Baranski's serve to get ahead 8-2 and did not look back. The Cyclones were in control the whole way, hitting .289 as a team with Holthaus leading the way via eight first-set kills. Kate Shannon put up a 4-0 run to put ISU ahead 21-12, which was more than enough despite two 3-0 runs from WSC late. ISU moved ahead 1-0 on a Holthaus kill at 25-19.
Set Two: Iowa State 25 Wayne State 22
Wayne State moved ahead early 8-5via some Cyclone attack errors, but the Cyclones were able to steady the ship and move ahead 12-11 on an Annie Hatch ace. The two teams continued to trade the lead and tie throughout the frame, with the second set featuring 14 tied scores and 11 lead changes. WSC got ahead by three at 18-15 on an Alaina Wolff ace, but the Cyclones eventually rallied ahead at 20-19 on a Wayne State attack error. ISU ran off the final three points of the set, the last coming when Hatch and Alexis Engelbrecht stuffed Taya Beller at 25-22.
Set Three: Wayne State 25 Iowa State 23
Wayne State got ahead 4-1 and were in control of the first early on, with ISU not getting it first lead until 11-10 via a Jaci Brahmer attack error. Hatch killed to put ISU ahead 14-13, but the Wildcats ran off six of the next seven points to get ahead by four at 19-15. The Cyclones were not done, as three kills in four points from Kenzie Mantz helped knot the set back up at 21-21, but the Wildcats were able to rally and put the set away with an Alyssa Ballenger kill at 25-23.
Set Four: Iowa State 25 Wayne State 19
The Cyclones found themselves sliding in the wrong direction after Hatch was blocked by Brahmer and Rachel Walker, down 13-10. However, Hatch struck back behind the service line with a pair of aces in a 5-0 run that put ISU ahead. The Cyclones' next server was Shannon and she stepped up with a 3-0 run of her own to help put ISU in control. Wayne State battled back within one when Piper Mauck dumped one wide, but Abby Greiman killed to help settle the nerves and put ISU in control. The Cyclones hit .368 as a team in the fourth, with Engelbrecht killing on match point to wrap things up at 25-19.
Player of the Match
Eleanor Holthaus. The Cyclone junior continued to impress, matching her career-best with 22 kills, which she got at .309 hitting. She also recorded her seventh double-double of the season with 13 digs.
