AMES, Iowa – The No. 17 Iowa State gymnastics team (2-1, 2-1 Big 12) had a successful trip to the Mountain State, beating out West Virginia 196.125-195.175 Sunday afternoon at WVU Coliseum. It marks the second time in program history (2004 the other) that ISU has gone above 196.000 twice in its first three meets.
The Cyclones shined on the bars, with five performances above 9.800. Makayla Maxwell had one of her best days as a Cyclone across all her events, setting or tying new season highs on bars, vault and beam. Iowa State had eight different competitors set a new season high across the four disciplines.
"Today was as good of a start to a meet as we've had in a while," head coach Jay Ronayne said. "It was exactly the way we wanted to start off today. We followed up bars with six good vaults and we were able to go into the last half of the meet with things going the way we wanted. The message for today was let's be ourselves and do what we do in the gym. They did that today."
Uneven Bars
The Cyclones started with a strong performance on the bars, earning a total score of 49.200 and their best team score so far this season. They were led by Jade Vella-Wright who tied her season high with a 9.875 and picked up the event win. Makayla Maxwell tied her career high, scoring a 9.850. Addy De Jesus followed with a 9.825. Also earning a 9.825 were Madelyn Langkamp and Natalie Horowitz, both setting a new season high.
Vault
Iowa State continued their strong start to the meet on vault, posting a score of 49.100. Picking up the event win and a season-high was Makayla Maxwell with a 9.900. Sophia Steinmeyer and Kelsey Boychuk followed with scores of 9.825 and 9.800, respectively. Emilie Hong also started her Iowa State career with a strong performance, picking up a score of 9.800. Addy De Jesus earned a score of 9.775 to round out the event.
Balance Beam
The Cyclones rounded out the meet with a total score 48.975 on the beam. Iowa State was led by Meixi Semple, who earned a 9.850 to set a new season high. She was followed by Sophia Steinmeyer, who tied her season high with a score of 9.800. Rounding out the scoring were Makayla Maxwell (making her debut on beam), Addy De Jesus, and Kelsey Boychuk, all of whom notched scores of 9.775
Floor Exercise
Iowa State notched a score of out 48.850 on the floor. Maddie Diab put on a strong performance, earning a 9.900 to set a new season high. Closely following was Sophia Steinmeyer who scored a 9.850 to tie her career high on the event. Madelyn Langkamp earned a 9.775 and Phoebe Turner set a new season high with a 9.675. Finishing up the scoring for ISU was Addy De Jesus, who posted a 9.625.
All-Around
Addy De Jesus was the lone all-arounder for Iowa State, scoring a 39.050 to pick up the event win.

The Cyclones head to Fort Worth, Texas to challenge No. 5 Oklahoma, Texas Woman's University, and Centenary at the Metroplex Challenge. The meet is set for 7 p.m. on Saturday.
