AMES, Iowa – The No. 20 Iowa State gymnastics team (10-8, 3-2 Big 12) placed fourth in the NCAA Regionals Semifinal in Tuscaloosa, Alabama with a total score of 196.525, tied with the 2003 Cyclones for the program's best score ever posted at an NCAA Gymnastics Championships Regional.
No. 7 Alabama finished first with a 197.525, No. 10 Arkansas placed second with a 197.250 and No. 19 Iowa finished third with a 197.050.
The Cyclones saw another stand-out performance from Makayla Maxwell on the vault, as she earned her fourth 9.925 this season. Iowa State also saw a strong effort from Kelsey Boychuk. Boychuk earned career high on both the balance beam and on the floor with 9.850s. The Cyclones finished off their season with their fourth highest overall team score of the year.
"This is a very special team," head coach Jay Ronayne said. "I don't think we could've had the success we've had, or even survived the ups and downs, without this group. They put everything they have out there every day, trying to make sure they're doing the right things for their teammates. I couldn't be more proud of them."
Vault
Iowa State started their day with a season-high 49.350 on the vault. Makayla Maxwell earned a 9.925 for the fourth time this season to lead the Cyclones, finishing second in the session on the event. Addy De Jesus continued her hot streak on the vault with a 9.900. Sophia Steinmeyer and Kelsey Boychuk contributed scores of 9.875 and 9.850, respectively and Phoebe Turner and Emilie Hong each had 9.800s.
Balance Beam
The Cyclones kept the momentum going on the beam, earning a team score of 49.225. Phoebe Turner led ISU by tying her career high with a 9.875. Kelsey Boychuk also earned a new career high, earning a score of 9.850. Sophia Steinmeyer and Meixi Semple also put up matching scores of 9.850. Addy De Jesus finished up the scoring for Iowa State with a 9.800.
Floor Exercise
Iowa State finished the meet off with a score of 49.025 on floor. Maddie Diab led the Cyclones with a score of 9.875. Kelsey Boychuk earned another career high, scoring a 9.850 along with Addy De Jesus. Phoebe Turner scored a 9.750, and Andrea Maldonado added a 9.700.
Uneven Bars
The Cyclones notched a total score of 48.925 on the bars. Jade Vella-Wright led Iowa State with a 9.850. She was closely followed Madelyn Langkamp with a 9.825 and Natalie Horowitz who earned a 9.800. Makayla Maxwell scored a 9.750 and Loganne Basuel notched a 9.700 to round out the scorers.
All-Around
Addy De Jesus was the lone all-arounder for Iowa State, earning a score of 39.125.
