DES MOINES, Iowa – The Iowa State women's distance crew ensured the Cyclones' weekend at the Drake Relays got off to a strong start during Thursday night's Distance Carnival. ISU saw Abby Caldwell pick up a victory in the 3,000-meter steeplechase via a personal best, leading five of ISU's six competitors in earning personal bests on the night.
Caldwell got the race locked up in the first half, building a five-second lead through 1,400 meters via running the three fastest full laps up to that point. It then became a race against the clock and her personal best of 10:19.00 from the Longhorn Invitational in March. Caldwell closed in 79.63 to take the win in 10:05.62, winning by almost nine seconds. Her mark also moved her up to No. 19 in NCAA Division I this season at the time of publication.
Janette Schraft came up with her second impressive run at Drake in as many appearances Thursday night in the unseeded 1,500-meter run. The freshman took her time making her move, sitting in seventh after one lap and sixth with two to go. The Glenwood native then made her move, running the fastest final two laps of any competitors, going 72.86 to move up to third in her section at the bell and then 66.29 on the final lap to win her section in a personal best 4:23.97, nearly 18 seconds better than her previous best.
In the women's 5,000-meter, Dana Feyen took her time getting in on the action, sitting in last of the 16-person field after 2,200 meters. She got rolling in the second half of the race, making a big four-spot move up the field with four laps to go, and running the fastest final lap in the field at 73.17 to finish seventh in 16:29.61, eight seconds faster than her run at the Jim Duncan Invitational two weeks ago.
Grace Dickel made the biggest drop of the night, with the Minneapolis native dropping 26 seconds off her previous best en route to finishing 10th in 16:33.84. Brenna Cohoon took over 20 seconds off her run at the Jim Duncan Invitational two weeks ago, clocking in at 16:42.60.
