AMES, Iowa – Iowa State (24-17, 0-10 Big 12) dropped game one of its three-game series vs. Baylor (23-12, 4-3 Big 12), 9-5, on Friday afternoon at the Cyclone Sports Complex.
Sami Williams and Mikayla Ramos each hit home runs for the Cyclones, the first of which broke Iowa State's single-season program record. The 2021 Cyclones have now hit 50 homers on the year, besting the previous record of 48 set in 2019.
Baylor 9, Iowa State 5
The Lady Bears got off to a fast start in their first trip to Ames since 2018. Emily Hott and Aliyah Binford each collected RBI singles in the top of the first to give BU a 2-0 advantage after one. The lead would stretch to 5-0 in the second. Lou Gilbert hit a two-run home run, followed by a Goose McGlaun RBI single up the middle.
Skyler Ramos got the Cyclones on the board in the home half of the second. Alesia Ranches and Sarah Tyree started the inning with base hits to put two on with two out for Ramos. The native of Ventura, Calif., laced a two-RBI triple off the fence in left field to give Iowa State a spark. It was Ramos' team-leading third triple of the season.
The top of the Baylor order did more damage in the top of the fourth. Hott, McGlaun and Binford all collected RBI in the inning, as BU scratched out three runs on three hits to put the visitors in front, 8-2.
Williams crushed her solo shot in the bottom of the fifth inning. The homer not only broke ISU's single-season team home run record, it was also the 17th of the year for Williams, tying the individual single-season record she set in 2019.
Hott plated the final BU run of the day in the sixth, racing home to score as Iowa State turned a double play.
Tyree notched a RBI double to right center in the bottom of the sixth, and Mikayla Ramos launched a solo home run in the seventh, but it would not be enough.
Baylor starting pitcher Gia Rodoni picked up the complete game victory with seven strikeouts on the day. For the Cyclones, relief pitcher Shannon Mortimer had a solid outing, going 3.0 innings while allowing just one earned run with two strikeouts.
