EUGENE, Oregon – The opening night of the new Hayward Field deserved its first of soon to be many big-time performances and memories, and it was Iowa State's distance crew who delivered Friday night at the Hayward Premiere.
In the men's 10,000 meters, the much-anticipated first race between Iowa State's NCAA champions, Wesley Kiptoo and Edwin Kurgat, delivered and then some. Kiptoo got the win in 27:58.10, edging Kurgat's 27:58.33, the top two marks in the country this season at 10,000 meters. Kugat's time is also his personal best and good for #2 in ISU history in the event.
After 4,000 meters of pacing from Oregon's NCAA indoor mile champion Cooper Teare, the men's 10,000m became a three-horse race between Kiptoo, Kurgat and Portland's Stan Niesten. It only took the Cyclone duo two laps to drop the Pilots' competitor and leave the second-half of the race to be fought out by ISU's two NCAA champions. Kurgat led with a mile to go, but Kiptoo overtook with 1,000m remaining. Lapped traffic added an intriguing element to the final lap, but Kiptoo was able to navigate it successfully and hold off Kurgat's late surge to get the win.
Those were not the only big men's 10,000m performances, as Mitchell Day put up a huge personal best, knocking over 75 seconds off his previous best en route to finishing 13th in 28:55.03, good for No. 8 in ISU history.
In the men's steeplechase, David Too took the lead with three laps to go, breaking up the five-man BYU stranglehold on the front of the pack. The only Cougar who could stick with him was Clayson Shumway, with the freshman making the pass on Too in the final lap. The Cyclone had one final push to try and reclaim his lead and the win, but Shumway's lean at the line was enough, finishing 0.10 seconds ahead of Too. Too's mark of 8:47.58 was an eight-second personal best, is No. 2 in the country this season at the time of publication and is No. 7 in ISU history.
Festus Lagat showed his improved strength in the longer races with his effort in the 1,500-meter run. With an already quick pace going, the four-time All-American was able to get himself to the outside and navigate his away around the traffic and use his speed, running the final 400 in 55.84 en route to his third-place mark of 3:39.93. Lagat is the first Cyclone since school record holder Steve Green to go sub-3:40 in the 1,500 and his mark is No. 4 in ISU history. At the time of publication, Lagat's time is good for No. 5 in Division I this season.
For the Iowa State women, Cailie Logue and Abby Caldwell both did well to rally to strong finishes in their respective races. Caldwell rallied in the final two laps of the 3,000m steeplechase to move up two spots to take sixth in 10:19.34, just missing out from her PR of 10:19.00 from last month. For Logue, she used a strong finish in the women's 10,000m to claim fifth place in 33:09.99. At the time of release, Logue's time is good for No. 6 in NCAA Division I this season.
At the Florida Relays, the day was highlighted by a school-record effort from Vlad Pavlenko in the men's hammer throw. The senior and two-time All-American was looking to bounce back from a disappointing foul out at Drake last weekend, and ensured there would not be a repeat on his second throw to get on the board. Pavlenko saved his best for last, as he unloaded a final throw of 222-9 (67.89m) to move up from fifth to third and set a new school record.
Pavlenko took down his previous school record of 217-10 (66.41m) from the 2019 War Eagle Invite, and at the time of publication was ranked No. 11 nationally in the men's hammer throw. His teammates were also strong, with Peter Kenn setting a PR and moving up to No. 8 in ISU history with his 186-10 (56.95m) to finish 11th, while Joe Ryan just missed out on ISU's all-time top-10 with a huge collegiate-best of 183-5 (55.92m).
