MANHATTAN, Kansas – Iowa State swept the 10,000-meter run titles Friday night at the Big 12 Outdoor Track and Field Championships at R.V. Christian Track. Wesley Kiptoo took the men's 10,000m crown in wire-to-wire fashion, while Cailie Logue defended her women's 10K crown for her ninth career Big 12 title. The sweep by ISU was the first time in Big 12 history that one school has swept the 10K crowns and the second time in Iowa State history, joining the 1985 Big Eight Championships (also held at K-State).
In the field, the Cyclone men added a pair of silver medals, while the ISU women also scored in the hammer throw and javelin, ensuring ISU was represented in the points in all six scored events on Friday.
After one day of competition, Iowa State leads the men's team race with 47 points, while the Cyclone women are in second with 23 points.
Kiptoo ran a 62-second first lap to get ahead by 10 seconds 400 meters in, and did not look back en route to his fourth Big 12 title of the 2020-21 year and first outdoor crown. Kiptoo completely dominated and came home in a new meet-record time of 28:22.98, 26 seconds better than Kennedy Kithuka's previous record from the 2014 Championships.
Kiptoo led an ISU 1-2-3-4, the first time one team took at least the top-four spots since Colorado took the top-five in 2008. Edwin Kurgat came in second in 28:47.29, while Thomas Pollard crossed third in 28:47.63, both below the previous Championships Record. David Too was fourth, holding off Texas' Haftu Knight on the final lap to cross in a personal best 28:51.83. Pollard is now No. 8 in ISU history for the event, with Too at No. 9. Mitchell Day finished off a 31-point evening for the men's 10K squad in seventh in 29:28.88.
A controlled tempo for the first 5,200 meters saw Logue, Dana Feyen and Brenna Cohoon share pacing/leading duties. With 12 laps to go, Logue began to pick up the pace and took Oklahoma State's Molly Born and Texas' Madeline Vondra into a lone lead group. Logue was the leader until five laps to go, when Vondra made the pass to get ahead, but Logue retook the lead with 1,000 meters to go and pulled away to defend her Big 12 Outdoor 10K title in 34:07.94.
Logue is now a nine-time Big 12 champion across track and field and cross country and has three conference outdoor titles to her name now, with the 5,000m run on Sunday her first chance to make it 10. She led a group of four Cyclone scorers, with Dana Feyen taking fourth in 35:02.80, Winrose Chesang finishing sixth in her first ISU 10K in 35:15.72 and Brenna Cohoon seventh in her first 10K in 35:24.97.
Scott Fuchs was steady across his first five throws, going between 216-2 (65.90m) and 219-2 (66.81m) on those, but in the fifth round Texas Tech's Werner Bouwer bounced Fuchs down to third after sitting in the top-two during the first four rounds. Fuchs saved his best for last and then some with a 17-foot PR of 236-7 (72.12m) to get back into the silver medal position. Fuchs' throw also puts him at No. 17 in NCAA Division I for the season.
Vlad Pavlenko was able to battle to his seed, with the senior ranked No. 4 nationally in the men's hammer throw. His best throw of the day came on his third, as he fired a 219-8 (66.96m). He came close to eclipsing it on his final throw of the day, but came up just three centimeters short at 219-7 (66.93m).
Bailey Righi rallied in difficult conditions to finish seventh with a best of 144-3 (43.98m). Righi barely made it into finals in ninth, but improved on all three of her final throws, moving up to eighth on her fourth with a 138-8 (42.46m), improving on her fifth throw at 139-11 (42.65m) and then moving up another spot to seventh with the 144-3 (43.98m).
Iowa State's first points of the weekend came in the afternoon from Antonella Creazzola, who took eighth in the women's hammer throw with a season-best 188-3 (57.39m). Creazzola was in a battle with TTU's Seasons Usual for the final scoring spot, Usual moved up to eighth on her fifth throw of 185-11 (56.66m), but Creazzola struck back to get on the board on her last two throws of 188-2 (57.35m) and 188-3 (57.39m).
