AMES, Iowa – Iowa State (1-0) kicked off the 2021 volleyball campaign with a 3-1 (25-20, 25-20, 23-25, 25-17) win over Drake (0-1) in the first match of the Cyclone Challenge at Hilton Coliseum. The Cyclones will be looking to conclude a 2-0 weekend with a win over Omaha tomorrow at 4 p.m. in Hilton.
Iowa State's balanced attack, featuring four players with at least 12 kills, was guided by setter Jaden Newsome's 53 assists and 13 digs. Also getting a double-double was Brooke Andersen, who posted 14 kills and 13 digs. Eleanor Holthaus also had 14 kills, while Candelaria Herrera got her 13 kills at .417 hitting.
The ISU defense held Drake to .105 hitting, with debuting libero Marija Popovic getting 21 digs, while Allie Petry marked her collegiate debut with 11 digs. Holthaus and Alexis Englebrecht each had five block assists, helping the ISU front row record 13.0 total blocks on the night.
Set One: Iowa State 25 Drake 20
The Cyclones went on a 5-0 run, aided by three Drake errors to break out to a 9-4 lead. It took a while for the visitors to get back into it, but they were able to pull within two at 15-13 and within one at 18-17. However, ISU never relinquished its lead and was able to piece together the final points, with Candelaria Herrera and Annie Hatch combining to block Drake's Taylor Oberpriller to give the home team the first 25-20.
Set Two: Iowa State 25 Drake 20
ISU was only behind once all set at 8-7, but also struggled to pull away, not getting ahead by more than three until a Lindsey Pliapol attack error gave the Cyclones a four-point margin at 19-15. Drake was able to battle back with a late 3-0 run capped by a Pliapol kill at 20-19, but never tied it back up or got ahead, as Hatch and Alexis Engelbrecht each recorded a block and a kill to restore the ISU advantage. Hatch got the final of her five second-set kills to win the frame 25-20.
Set Three: Drake 25 Iowa State 23
Drake was in control for much of the third, taking the lead at 4-3 on a Haley Bush kill and building the advantage to as many as five at 12-7. The Cyclones were able to claw their way back, with Abby Greiman coming off the bench to tie it at 17-17 and ISU tying it again at 19-19 and 23-23. However, like the Bulldogs in the previous frame, ISU was never able to pull ahead, as Drake got to set point first and cashed in on the first asking when Hatch fired wide to give the third to the Bulldogs, 25-23.
Set Four: Iowa State 25 Drake 17
Drake got three Bush kills to move ahead 4-0, but the Cyclones quickly responded and moved ahead for good with a 5-0 run powered by a pair of Greiman blocks. The final frame was the Cyclones' best in attack, as ISU hit .375 as a team, led by four kills on five swings from Herrera and four kills from Andersen. Andersen's final kill was the last action of the night, wrapping up the set 25-17 and the match 3-1.
