Iowa State opened Big 12 play with a 2-0 weekend over TCU at Hilton Coliseum. The Cyclones swept the Horned Frogs in the opening match, hitting .375 to power past the visitors. Saturday's contest was a tougher battle, with the home team grinding out a five-set victory. Iowa State was down 22-19 in the fourth set, but claimed the final six points of the frame for force a fifth, which the Cyclones dominated 15-4. Iowa State was led by an outstanding all-around weekend from Jaden Newsome, who had 11 kills, 10 blocks, seven digs and four aces, along with averaging 9.38 assists per set while the Cyclones hit .326 as a team across the weekend. Candelaria Herrera had 2.50 kills per set at .447 hitting and 1.38 blocks per set across the two matches.
The Kansas Jayhawks, like Iowa State, come into the weekend with a 10-3 overall record and are 2-0 in Big 12 play after picking up a pair of five-set victories at Texas Tech last weekend. The Jayhawks, winners of their last eight matches, were led by an outstanding weekend from outside Jenny Mosser, who averaged 3.00 kills per set and 3.00 digs per set along with firing seven aces against the Red Raiders. Kansas is Iowa State's most-frequent in program history, as the two teams will cross the century mark for career meetings this weekend. Iowa State leads the all-time series 52-45-1, with the two sides splitting last season's meetings at Hilton Coliseum. KU took the first meeting in five sets, overcoming Candelaria Herrera's 20 kills at .375 hitting, while Brooke Andersen had a double-double of 10 kills at 15 digs. ISU claimed the second match 3-1, Andersen leading the attack with 14 kills, while Eleanor Holthaus had a double-double with 12 kills at .310 hitting and 11 digs.Â
While the Cyclones are 16-23 all-time in Lawrence, Christy Johnson-Lynch owns a record of 20-12 against the Jayhawks as ISU head coach.
