Freshmen Impress at Iowa State Wrestle-Offs

AMES, Iowa – Iowa State held its final wrestle-offs Friday evening inside Lied Rec. Results from the evening are listed below.

Caleb Fuessley began the night with a tightly contested victory over Conor Knopick, 3-3 (RT TB-2) in a semifinal at 125 pounds.

Zach Redding looked solid at 133 pounds in a 10-2 major decision over Corey Cabanban.

A pair of freshmen battled it out for the 141 spot where Casey Swiderski edged Jacob Frost by 6-5 decision.

Freshman Paniro Johnson emerged victorious over Cam Robinson at 149 pounds via 3-2 decision. Johnson used an escape and a takedown in the final 16 seconds to overcome the late deficit.

A late takedown and a ride out in the third period for Jason Kraisser lifted him over Isaac Judge, 5-4.

Another tight match at 165 saw Carter Schmidt prevail over Grant Stotts, 2-2 RT TB-1.

MJ Gaitan pinned Julien Broderson in 5:21 at 174 pounds. The freshman trailed 3-0 entering the final period but started on bottom and reversed Broderson to his back for the fall.

Marcus Coleman and Yonger Bastida looked dominant at 184 pounds and 197 pounds, respectively. Coleman won by fall over Cody Fisher in 3:57 while Bastida racked up 4:56 of riding time in a 16-6 major decision over Rowan Udell.

At heavyweight, Sam Schuyler left no doubt in a 12-3 major decision over Francis Duggan.

Kysen Terukina capped the evening with a 6-3 decision over Fuessley in the 125-pound final.

Iowa State opens its season next weekend in Jacksonville, Fla. at the Battle in the River City. The Cyclones will take on Little Rock, Campbell and No. 12 Wisconsin.
