AMES, Iowa – Iowa State (10-7, 2-2 Big 12) took down Kansas (12-5, 2-3 Big 12) in four sets (25-18, 21-25, 25-23, 25-23) on Friday night for the Cyclone's 10th win of the season. The Cyclones handed the Jayhawks their lone conference match to not win more than one set.
The defense shined as five notched 10 or more digs in front of a crowd of 3,136. Brooke Stonestreet led with 21 as the sophomore recorded her fifth 20-plus dig performance of the season. The team ended the match with 72 total digs.
Maya Duckworth put together a match with 12 digs and five aces, joining Stonestreet as one to total a match this season with at least five. Duckworth came within two kills of notching a double-double.
Eleanor Holthaus tied the fifth-most kills in program history as she totaled 11 in the match and 1,334 on her career. The Richmond, Minn. native brought in her third-straight double-double as she added 10 digs.
Setters Jaden Newsome (20 assists, 10 digs) and Morgan Brandt (27 assists, 10 digs) also recorded double-doubles to total three for ISU. Newsome was one of three to send over an ace as Iowa State finalized eight.
Holthaus was joined by Alexis Engelbrecht and Solei Thomas who matched each other with 11 kills.
The team put up 10.0 total blocks in the victory, led by Engelbrecht with five total.
SET ONE
Holthaus and Abby Greiman combined for the block to put the Cyclones on the board first. The Jayhawks then took the next six points before ISU came back on a scoring run of their own to knot things up. Another ISU block capped a 4-0 scoring run to put the Cyclones up 10-7 as Kansas called a timeout. Iowa State held the lead as Duckworth served to two straight aces as ISU stretched their advantage to four. Engelbrecht then hit her third kill on just four swings to seal the set for ISU 25-18 as the Cyclones held the Jayhawks to .024 hitting.
SET TWO
Iowa State took an early lead as Greiman hit perfectly with her third kill to put the score at 4-1. Greiman then extended the lead to 10-6 on her fourth kill, still holding a perfect hitting percentage. KU tied the score at 11-11 as they hit a 5-0 scoring run. Engelbrecht totaled her fifth kill at .667 to match Kansas at 16-16. Dominantly returning to the court following injury was Annie Hatch as she delivered her first kill of the season and totaled two in the set at .667 hitting. The Jawhawks hit .429 in the frame as they went ahead 25-21 to tie up the match.
SET THREE
Hatch continued the attack, delivering her fourth to give ISU the lead at 6-5. Iowa State held the lead at 14-11 as Thomas hit her eighth kill of the match. Duckworth then stepped to the service line to hand in her fourth ace at 17-12 to double her previous career high. The Cyclones were the first to 20 points on Hatch's sixth kill as KU trailed by three. A tie again was seen at 21-21 as Kansas took four-consecutive points. ISU took the match lead back by a score of 25-23 on a solo block by Engelbrecht, her fifth total.
SET FOUR
Thomas was the first to enter double-digit kills for Iowa State's first point of the frame. Duckworth followed that up with the freshman's fifth ace. Engelbrecht hit an ace of her own and second of the match to double ISU's advantage at 10-5. Engelbrecht then joined Thomas in double figures with her 10th kill as Iowa State remained ahead. Holthaus followed with her 10th kill, the 13th of the season and 68th career match in double digits. The victory was officially notched on Engelbrecht's 11th kill by a score of 25-23.
