LAWRENCE, Kan. – Iowa State (18-11, 9-6 Big 12) dropped the match to Kansas (18-9, 8-7 Big 12) in five sets Saturday morning (25-22, 25-22, 14-25, 18-25, 8-15). ISU led 2-0 to begin, but the Jayhawks pulled off the comeback to end victorious.
Solei Thomas entered the match eight kills away from the 1,000 of her career and ended with eight to now hold a perfect 1,000. Thomas has now hit 214 on the season.
Maya Duckworth led the Cyclones with 14 kills, her 18th double-digit match of the season. The freshman also notched five block assists to match her career high and 11 digs, good for her sixth double-double. Annie Hatch was the second Cyclone in double digits with 10 while Jaden Newsome joined Duckworth in notching a double-double (15 assists, 12 digs), the 21st of her career.
Blockers tallied 13 total blocks through the match. Hatch put up two solo blocks, matching her season high and coming within one of the senior's career high. Alexis Engelbrecht totaled four total blocks to pass 200 on her career with 201 total.
Brooke Stonestreet performed to her 10th 20-plus dig match of the season as the sophomore put up a total of 22. Eleanor Holthaus had her 41st match with double-digit digs, nearly totaling 20 with 18 while coming within a kill of a double-double.
SET ONE
KU jumped out to a 4-0 lead until Duckworth put down the kill. Duckworth and Hatch recorded the Cyclones' first three kills while the score was brought to 7-5 with the Jayhawks ahead. Two-straight Kansas aces aided in KU taking a run of four before Holthaus slammed one down. Thomas sliced down her first kill to trim the lead to 12-8 and begin an ISU scoring run. The Cyclones battled back after being down by five to tie it up at 12 while Duckworth collected her third kill on four attempts. Six ties followed before ISU broke through to lead 22-18 on the fourth Cyclone block. KU came back to knot the score, but the Cyclones found set point on a Duckworth kill as the set was sealed 25-22 on the fifth ISU block.
SET TWO
Iowa State hit over .600 to begin the set and lead 4-1 while ISU continued to control, pushing the advantage to 7-3 on Hatch's second solo block. The Jayhawks trimmed the deficit to 11-10 but did not find the lead. Duckworth remained hot, sending her eighth kill at .583 hitting. ISU held the advantage 19-13 after Hatch sent her fifth kill over. KU then fought back to tie it at 21 but Iowa State kept control, ending the set ahead 25-22.
SET THREE
As Kansas led 12-5, Duckworth hit her 10th kill remaining above an efficiency of .400. The Jayhawks kept the lead, making it to 20 points while ISU held 12. Kansas held Iowa State to .057 hitting while hitting .320 in the set to fight off the sweep with a set score of 25-14.
SET FOUR
The Cyclones collected their 10th block to begin the set up 2-0. KU pulled ahead 9-4 until Hatch slammed another to end the 5-0 Jayhawk run. Kansas continued to hold the lead while Cyclone blockers tallied the 13th to trim KU's advantage to 18-13. Kansas had two in double figures while KU held ISU to .109 hitting to force a fifth by a set score of 25-18.
SET FIVE
A Mariah Mitchell kill put the Cyclones on the board, but KU found efficiency in hitting over .600 to lead 8-1 as the teams switched sides. Thomas hit her sixth kill followed by Engelbrecht hitting her seventh to make it 10-3. ISU fought off match point on Thomas' eighth kill to notch No. 1,000. Duckworth hit a kill to fight off another but a KU kill sealed the match 15-8.
