JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Iowa State started its season 2-0 with decisive victories over Little Rock, 33-7, and Campbell, 34-3, Saturday afternoon at the inaugural Battle in the River City.
The Cyclones extended their dual win streak to 15 dating back to last season, the second-longest active streak nationally.
How it Happened: No. 14 Iowa State 33, Little Rock 7
Six Cyclones earned bonus-point victories and three freshmen made their debut in the season-opener against Little Rock, all picking up wins.
Veteran Zach Redding left no doubt in a 14-5 decision over Josh Sarpy at 133 pounds before Jacob Frost and No. 24 Paniro Johnson each picked up their first wins as Cyclones. Frost won by decision, 6-2, over Jayden Gomez while Johnson edged Joseph Bianchi, 3-2, thanks to a takedown with just over a minute remaining.
The back half of the lineup was dominant with all five of the upper weights securing bonus-point wins. At 165 pounds, No. 3 David Carr picked up an 11-1 major decision before freshman MJ Gaitan overcame an early deficit to win by fall at 174. Gaitan trailed Little Rock's Triston Wills, 6-3, after two periods but reversed Wills and used a body lock to secure the pin in 5:27.
No. 5 Marcus Coleman kept it rolling with an 18-2 tech fall in 4:34 at 184 pounds while No. 6 Yonger Bastida and No. 16 Sam Schuyler closed the dual with back-to-back major decisions. Bastida used three first-period takedowns to build an early lead en route to an 11-3 victory at 197 pounds. Schuyler looked dominant in a 21-7 victory over Josiah Hill at heavyweight.
How it Happened: Iowa State 34, Campbell 3
Iowa State dropped only one match in its second dual win of the season. Casey Swiderski, Marcus Coleman and Sam Schuyler each defeated top 20 opponents.
Kysen Terukina made his season debut at 125 pounds with a 12-4 major decision against Zak Thompson. Zach Redding improved to 2-0 on the year with a close 3-2 decision over Domenic Zaccone at 133 pounds.
Swiderski was electric as he racked up three takedowns against No. 18 Shannon Hanna for his first win as a Cyclone, 7-4. Cam Robinson used his length and speed to his advantage in a 13-4 major decision against Domenic DeFalco, amassing 3:46 of riding time in the win.
David Carr took down Campbell's Riley Augustine six times before earning a fall in 4:23 at 165 pounds. Julien Broderson tallied a 5-2 decision at 174 pounds while Coleman looked solid in a 13-5 major decision against No. 20 Caleb Hopkins.
Yonger Bastida didn't mess around in his 15-5 major decision over Levi Hopkins at 197 pounds, which included 2:19 of riding time for the Cuban. Schuyler capped the dual with an upset over No. 12 Taye Ghadiali at heavyweight in a 6-5 thriller.
