Ranches’ Grand Slam Sends Cyclones Past Jackrabbits

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – A five-run first inning for Iowa State, including a grand slam from Alesia Ranches, led the Cyclones to an 8-3 victory over South Dakota State Saturday afternoon at the Doc Halvorson UNI-Dome Classic. The Cyclones improved to 3-0 with the victory, while the Jacks dropped to 1-2 on the year.
Six Cyclones tallied a hit in the victory, while Carli Spelhaug and Milaysia Ochoa each scored a pair of runs. Ranches drove in four runs, while Camille Marin drove in three.
Karlie Charles had a no-decision in the circle, tossing three innings in the start. Charles struck out a pair, while allowing three runs on six hits. Ellie Spelhaug picked up the victory in relief, tossing four shutout innings. Spelhaug allowed two hits and struck out four.
In the top of the first inning, Marin drove in C. Spelhaug on a sacrifice fly. After a walk by Kaylee Pond loaded the bases, Ranches mashed the home run to left field. The grand slam by Ranches was the second grand slam of the day for the Cyclones, as Mikayla Ramos hit one in the first game of the day against Nebraska.
Iowa State added three runs in the fourth inning, all coming with two outs. Ochoa doubled to bring in C. Spelhaug for the first run before Ramos and Ochoa scored on a single to center field by Marin. South Dakota State scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning on a pair of home runs.
The Cyclones close out play at the Doc Halvorson UNI-Dome Classic on Sunday with a pair of games. Iowa State faces Drake at 1:30 p.m., followed by a game against Northern Iowa at 3:45 p.m. Both games will be available on ESPN3.
