AMES, Iowa - Fresh off the best season in program history, Iowa State softball looks to continue its winning ways in 2022. The Cyclones open the new campaign at the Doc Halverson UNI-Dome Classic in Cedar Falls where ISU will square off against Omaha, Nebraska, South Dakota State, Drake and UNI. Iowa State opens the tournament Friday at 11:15 a.m. against Omaha.

Key Storylines
- Iowa State returns the core from a team that finished the 2021 season with a 34-23 record, earned a No. 2 seed at the NCAA Columbia Regional and advanced to the regional final. ISU's .596 winning percentage was the program's best since 1989 (.657).
- Head coach Jamie Pinkerton enters his fifth season at the helm of the ISU softball program. Pinkerton has led Iowa State to its two highest RPI finshes in program history (No. 48 in 2019, No. 34 in 2021).
- Pinkerton is one of just three active head coaches in the country to guide three different programs to the NCAA Tournament, joining Tyra Perry (Illinois) and Mickey Dean (Auburn). Pinkerton led Arkansas to regionals in 2008 & 2009, Montana in 2017 and Iowa State in 2021.
- Iowa State was tabbed fifth in the Big 12 Preseason Poll in a vote of the league's head coaches. Mikayla Ramos was the lone Cyclone named to the All-Big 12 Preseason TeamÂ
- Iowa State returns two of its three players who earned All-Big 12 honors last season in Mikayla Ramos (Second Team) and Milaysia Ochoa (Freshman).
- Ramos' 57 RBIs in 2021 broke ISU's single-season record and ranked 12th in the nation.
- Ochoa stole 18 bases last season, tied for 15th nationally among freshmen and tied for first among Big 12 players.
- Iowa State returns its entire pitching staff from last season. The Cyclone arms combined to strike out 213 batters last season. In 2021, 86.0 percent of all innings were pitched by freshmen or sophomores for ISU. Shannon Mortimer was the lone upperclassman in the bullpen.
- ISU hit 64 home runs last season, setting a new single-season school record. The program's single-season home run record has been set in each of Pinkerton's three full seasons as Iowa State's head coach (2018 - 45, 2019 - 48, 2021 - 64). The record was 40 prior to Pinkerton's arrival in Ames.
- Iowa State returns four of its five players that hit .300 or better last season: Mikayla Ramos (.365), Emilie Guerra (.333), Milaysia Ochoa (.326) and Carli Spelhaug (.323).
- The Cyclones are 3-1 in season-openers under Jamie Pinkerton.
