Iowa State Run-Rules Omaha in Season Opener

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – Iowa State (1-0) opened the 2022 season with a convincing run-rule victory against Omaha (0-2) Friday afternoon inside the UNI-Dome. The Cyclones rolled the Mavericks, 10-2, in five innings.
ISU used nine hits to plate its 10 runs, with multi-hit performances from Milaysia Ochoa (2-for-3) and Kaylee Pond (2-for-3). The pair batted in two and three runs, respectively. Skyler Ramos homered in her first at-bat of the season as part of a two-RBI day.
Freshman Angelina Allen blasted a ground-rule double in her first at-bat as a Cyclone. Mikayla Ramos, Pond and Alesia Ranches joined her with extra-base hits, all doubles, on the afternoon.
Leadoff batter Carli Spelhaug finished hitless but reached base on balls three times, scored two runs and finished with a stolen base.
Saya Swain (1-0) earned the win in the circle after tossing four scoreless frames with two strikeouts. Ellie Spelhaug entered in relief of Swain in the fifth inning and struck out one to seal the victory.
Iowa State plated four runs on four hits in the opening frame followed by a five-run second inning to take a quick 9-0 lead. Omaha responded with two runs in the top of the third but a ground-rule double from Pond that scored Mikayla Ramos gave the Cyclones a 10-2 advantage.

Up Next
The Cyclones continue action with a doubleheader on day two at the UNI-Dome Classic Saturday. ISU will take on Nebraska at 8 a.m. before facing South Dakota State at 12:30 p.m.
