AMES, Iowa – The Iowa State swimming and diving team (8-2, 2-1 Big 12) travels to Morgantown, W. Va. for the 2022 Big 12 Championships slated for Feb. 23-26. The Cyclones boast 13 All-Big 12 honorees and 20 Iowa State all-time performers to enter the championship.
Competition begins with time trials Wednesday at 10 a.m. ET. Preliminaries begin at 10 a.m. each day with finals starting at 6 p.m. Prelims and finals will be broadcasted on Big 12 Now on ESPN+.Â
ON THE BLOCKS
Both Lehr Thorson and Martha Haas have handed in NCAA 'B' cut times in the 100 breast, making for the first time since 2009 for two swimmers to notch a 'B' standard in the event. Thorson stopped the clock at 1:01.71 against Iowa and Haas at 1:01.79 at the Kansas Classic.Â
All top-five sprint freestylers this season have timed in sub-24 seconds in the 50 free and sub-52 seconds in the 100 free, a program first heading into the Big 12 Championships.Â
Seniors Thorson and Lucia Rizzo currently hold spots on the all-time career points at Big 12s list and set eyes on progressing upward.Â
ON THE BOARDS
For the first time since the 2015-16 season and fifth time in school history, four divers have cemented Zone cuts. Michelle Schlossmacher Smith and Joscelyn Buss have each solidified a Zone-qualifying score on all three boards. Buss becomes the second sophomore since 2000 to notch a cut on every board.Â
Schlossmacher Smith, Buss, Jayna Misra and Lauren Kimball each have a Zone cut on both springboards.Â
Kimball became the eighth Iowa State freshman since 2000 to achieve a cut score. Kimball dove to her first career cut against TCU on the one-meter with 281.95 and went on to notch an additional qualifying mark against Kansas on the three-meter with 284.70.Â
