MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Iowa State (8-2, 2-1 Big 12) concludes the 2022 Big 12 Championships in fifth with 497.5 points, less than five behind West Virginia. Iowa State earned 18 medals including five First Team All-Big 12 honors through the conference meet.
For the second time in school history, three 200 breaststrokers earned All-Big 12 status by swimming alongside each other in championship finals. Martha Haas turned in a dominant performance of 2:13.87, making her the third-fastest all-time. The swim was the fourth-fastest by any Cyclone.
Lehr Thorson touched next for fifth at 2:14.84, the ninth-fastest time in school history to finalize her breaststroke career with nine All-Big 12 honors. Alaina Breitbach stopped the clock eighth at 2:17.37.
Brinley Horras became the first in program history to earn All-Big 12 honors in the 200, 500 and 1650 free in the same year. The sophomore achieved the feat with a time of 16:54.04 for seventh in the meet and 11th-fastest by any Iowa State swimmer.
Also in distance, Madison Rundell cut a PR-shattering 18.58 seconds off her mile lifetime-best to post 17:03.36 and become the 16th-fastest perfomer in Iowa State history. Rundell followed that performance up with an all-time top-20 200 breast performance of 2:18.40.
Elizabeth Richardson became the fifth-fastest Iowa State 200 backstroker with her fourth-place finish of 1:58.60. The junior notched her first career First Team All-Big 12 honor as she touched to tie the 11th-fastest time in school history.
Winter Craig notched the next championship final finish in the 200 fly. Her time of 2:02.45 secured her first Big 12 medal with a sixth-place finish.
Michelle Schlossmacher Smith ends her Big 12 Championships career with five All-Big 12 honors. The senior finalized First Team All-Big 12 honors with a score of 241.75 for fourth overall. The score is the fifth-highest for a Cyclone diver at the conference meet.
Jayna Misra dove in platform finals to earn her first All-Big 12 honor with a score of 195.35. The junior placed eighth overall with the score.
Joscelyn Buss took the win in platform consolation finals with a Zone-qualifying score of 227.30 to tally the sophomore her eighth Zone cut on the season.
Lauren Kimball scored the second-highest with 212.25 in the event. The score is the highest all-time at the Big 12 Championship and the second-highest by a Cyclone freshman in history.
"It was a tremendous meet, unfortunately came up a little short," Head Coach Duane Sorenson said. "Our last year's most valuable person Lucia Rizzo came down sick in the first day and wasn't able to compete the last two days and it really hurt our total points. I was proud of the way our women fought back and swam hard and dove outstanding and came back to be in the lead by one point going into the last relay but ended up getting touhched-out by West Virginia. Overall, we swam really well but not up to our expectations."
