HOUSTON, Texas - The Iowa State Cyclones wrapped up the Big 12 Duals in Houston with strong performances across the distance freestyle events and individual races, showcasing team depth and consistency. Iowa State scored 781 points, finishing fifth overall.
"Our final session of the Big 12 dual meet went really well," said head coach Matt Leach. "We're looking to continue the great energy and effort we've built on the pool deck and in the water. I'm super excited for what the rest of the season holds as we move into championship-level form."
HOW IT HAPPENED
The day opened with the 1650-yard freestyle, where Carlotta Gazzola earned a fourth-place finish, contributing valuable points to the team total. Corinne Guist also competed, adding to Iowa State's overall score.
In the 200-yard individual medley, Emma Kuhn swam a strong race, finishing second with a time of 2:01.40 to earn a podium spot. Abbi Crum, Piper Hagen, and Anja Peck also competed, contributing scoring finishes for the Cyclones. Kuhn later added a fifth-place finish in the 200 backstroke, touching the wall in 2:03.91.
Iowa State featured three swimmers in the 100-yard freestyle, highlighted by Grace Swoboda, who finished fourth in 51.25. Kerilyn Mullica and Corinne Guist also scored key points for the team in the event.
In the 100-yard butterfly, Kendall Mallers swam a 2:03.62, earning fifth place. The time also secured her a spot on the Iowa State all-time top performers list as well as the freshman records list.
On the boards, the Cyclones were led by Kate Mitchell in platform diving, who scored 254.45 to finish fifth. Allyson Blumenfeld, Jade Hazes, and Grace Marek also delivered notable performances for the Cyclones.
ON DECK
The Cyclones return to the pool on January 31 for the annual Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Series dual, where they will face the Iowa Hawkeyes at Beyer Pool.
