AMES, Iowa – Izaiah Brockington scored a career-high 35 points and got a critical steal and lay-up with 22 seconds left to propel Iowa State (19-9, 6-9 Big 12) to an 84-81 comeback win over West Virginia (14-14, 3-12 Big 12) Wednesday night in Hilton Coliseum.
The Cyclones had to scrap, claw and battle their way back, overcoming a 12-point second-half deficit behind Brockington's brilliant performance. The Cyclone star carried his team after intermission, pouring in 25 second-half points. He also drilled a career-high five 3-pointers.
Brockington had help from Gabe Kalscheur, who tallied 17 points, including two huge 3-pointers in the final two and half minutes of the ballgame to keep the Cyclones within striking distance. He also made a pair of clutch free throws with under 10 seconds left.
Tyrese Hunter added 10 points and dished out a career-high nine assists.
The victory was critical for ISU's NCAA hopes and helped tie a school record along the way. ISU has a 17-win difference from last year, tying the best turnaround in school history with the 1999-2000 squad.
Turnovers hurt the Cyclones in the first half, as nine miscues led to a 41-31 lead at the break for the Mountaineers. ISU led 19-16 with 9:16 left in the first half, but five turnovers in its next six possessions allowed WVU to move ahead 30-24 with under five minutes remaining.
A total of 23 fouls were called in a sluggish first 20 minutes.
The Cyclones struggled to make up ground early in the second period, as WVU still held a double-digit lead (52-40) with 14 minutes remaining. ISU made a minor dent with back-to-back treys from Kalscheur and Brockington to make it a 52-46 ballgame.
A Hunter 3-pointer then cut the lead to two points, and then three-straight buckets by Brockington pushed the Cyclones into the lead at 60-58 with 8:23 remaining. However, a pair of 3-pointers by the Mountaineers swing the momentum back the other way.
ISU took the lead back, but a 6-1 WVU run pushed its lead to 77-73 with under three minutes remaining.
Kalscheur hit a pair of treys to knot the game at 79-79, but a jumper by Malik Curry with 1:27 left made it an 81-79 ballgame. Brockington was fouled with :28 seconds left, but he split the foul shots.
The Cyclones slapped on the press, and Brockington got the steal and lay-in to give the Cyclones the lead for good.
ISU is back in action at Kansas State on Saturday. Tipoff is at 1 p.m. CT.
