MORGANTOWN, W.V. – Iowa State (16-8, 3-8 Big 12) got down early and never recovered in a 79-63 loss at West Virginia (14-9, 3-7 Big 12) Tuesday night in Morgantown.
The Cyclones were in a hole quickly at 18-5 and spent the rest of the game trying to get out. ISU trailed by as many as 19 points in the second half before battling back to trim the lead to under 10 points at one point, but the Mountaineers held off a late rally to secure their seventh-straight win over the Cyclones at home.
Tyrese Hunter scored 17 of his career-high 22 points in the second half and dished out four assists. Caleb Grill chipped in with 12 points and Izaiah Brockington tallied 11 points.
ISU forced WVU into 20 turnovers, the ninth time a Cyclone opponent had 20+ turnovers in a game this season. But the Mountaineers made 25-of-29 shots from the foul line compared to ISU's 12-of-22 effort.
Grill did his best keep the Cyclones in the game in the opening period, draining 4-of-5 shots from beyond the arc. ISU was able to cut the early deficit to six points, but the Mountaineers went into the break with a 39-28 lead.
WVU quickly moved ahead by 18 points (48-30) with 14 minutes left in the contest.
ISU cut a 19-point lead down to 10 points (58-48) thanks to a 9-1 run. Hunter and Jayden Walker combined for all nine of the Cyclones' points in the run.
The Cyclones never got any closer than eight points, as WVU made its free throws down the stretch.
