ISU Downs Western Michigan, Advances to NCAA Second Round

AUBURN, Ala. – Iowa State (10-10, 1-1 Big 12) defeated Western Michigan 195.750-193.575 in the First Found of NCAA Regionals Wednesday afternoon inside Neville Arena.
The Cyclones advance to the Second Round Thursday at 7 p.m. against Florida, Denver and Ohio State with the top two teams advancing to Saturday's Regional Final.
Freshman Josie Bergstrom put up a strong performance on vault, earning a career-high 9.900 to lead the team on the event. She entered the meet with career high of 9.875, a score she earned twice this season. Maddie Diab continued to dominate on floor, earning a score of 9.925. This is her ninth score of 9.900 or better this season, and her third straight score above a 9.900.
Vault
Iowa State started the meet off with a total score of 49.100 on vault, led by Bergstrom's career-high 9.900. She was closely followed by a 9.850 from Kelsey Boychuk. Makayla Maxwell and Sophia Steinmeyer earned matching scores of 9.800 and Hannah Loyim scored a 9.750 to round things out.
Bars
The Cyclones notched a score of 49.075 on bars, led by a 9.850 from Ariana Orrego. Maxwell and Loyim both earned scores of 9.825. Laura Cooke scored a 9.800 while Ana Palacios closed things out with a 9.775.
Floor
The Cyclones posted a total 48.850 on floor, led once again by Diab who scored a 9.925. Orrego scored a 9.800 and Loyim earned a 9.775 on the event. Kelsey Boychuk added a 9.750 while Kaia Parker finished out the scoring with a 9.600.
Beam
The Cyclones scored a total of 48.725 on beam, led by a 9.825 from Loyim. Bergstrom and Meixi Semple earned matching scores of 9.800. Finishing out the scoring was Steinmeyer and Boychuk who earned scores of 9.675 and 9.625, respectively.
All-Around
Loyim was the lone all-arounder for the Cyclones, earning a score of 39.175.

The Cyclones continue their postseason push as they move to the Second Round of competition Thursday at 7 p.m. ISU will face Florida, Denver and Ohio State in a quad meet, with the top two teams advancing to Saturday's Regional Final.
