MORGANTOWN, W. Va. – With a lot on the line, No. 8 Iowa State (25-5, 14-4 Big 12) took down West Virginia (14-14, 7-11 Big 12) 74-57, setting a record 14 Big 12 wins and locking up the No. 2 seed in the Big 12 Championship. The Cyclones also picked up their 25th win of the season, marking the ninth time the Cyclones have totaled 25 or more wins in a season.
Emily Ryan was the star of the night netting a career-high 29 points. With her confidence on display in Morgantown she connected on a career-high 10 field goals, going an efficient 10-of-12 from the field to lead ISU to their seventh sweep of the season. Ashley Joens chipped in 12 points and nine rebounds, while Lexi Donarski added 11 to round out the Cyclones in double figures.
The win also keeps ISU's hopes of a share of the Big 12 regular season title alive with a Baylor loss to Texas Tech on Sunday.
How It Happened
The Cyclones struggled to get into a rhythm offensively in the first quarter, shooting just 2-of-10 from the field and committing seven turnovers as WVU jumped out to a 14-8 lead, A pair of freebies by Ashley Joens with seconds left pulled ISU back within four, 14-10. Fouls contributed to Iowa State's early woes with Morgan Kane and Beatriz Jordа̃o picking up two apiece before the under-5 timeout in the quarter.
Jordа̃o scored four quick points out of the gate in the second quarter to tie the game 14-14. The Cyclones gained some separation after four different players connected from long range, taking a 34-28 lead into the locker room. In the first half, ISU was paced by Ryan with nine points. Nyamer Diew added six points and two rebounds in her first career start, while Ashley Joens added eight points and six rebounds.
The third quarter was all Ryan all the time. The sophomore broke through the West Virginia defense, shooting a perfect 5-of-5 from the field and scoring 15 points, pushing the Cyclones ahead 55-44 entering the final quarter.
Behind a 6-of-10 performance from the floor in the fourth quarter, Iowa State maintained its double-digit lead, cruising to a 74-57 win.
