Gomez Win Highlights ISU's Saturday at Sun Angel

TEMPE, Arizona – Iowa State showed its strength in the men's 800-meter run once again at the Sun Angel Classic on Saturday, with Jason Gomez and Darius Kipyego's performances putting them among the nation's best in the event.

The Cyclones have a great history of success in the 800m at the Sun Angel Classic and Gomez and Kipyego added to that on Saturday, going 1-2 with Gomez taking first in 1:47.12 and Kipyego second in 1:47.22. At the time of publication, the duo ranks No. 5 and No. 7, respectively nationally on the season. On Iowa State's all-time top-10 for the event, Gomez moves up to No. 6, while Kipyego enters the list at No. 7.

A day after Kaylyn Hall and Katarina Vlahovic ran two of the five-fastest women's 100-meter hurdles times in school history, the duo followed up with strong performances in the final, with Hall taking third in 13.39 and Vlahvoic fifth in 13.50.

In the field, Kevin Sakson took fifth in the men's shot put with a best throw on the day of 58-6 3/4 (17.85m), putting him within an inch of entering ISU's all-time top-10 for the event.

The Cyclones head to Southern California next weekend for a trio of meets, with ISU being represented in the Bryan Clay Invitational at Azusa Pacific, the Mt. SAC Relays at Mt. San Antonio College and the Beach Invitational at Long Beach State.
