AMES, Iowa – Iowa State (21-19, 2-5 Big 12) outlasted Texas Tech (19-20, 2-8 Big 12) in thrilling fashion, 10-9, on a windy Thursday evening at the Cyclone Sports Complex. The Cyclones overcame an early six-run deficit, thanks in part to an eight-run third inning, to down the Red Raiders and take the series opener.
Texas Tech's seventh-inning rally came up short after the tying run was taken off the board upon video review. A hard-hit ball up the middle with the bases loaded deflected off shortstop Alesia Ranches' glove towards second baseman Kasey Simpson who dove on the loose ball while touching the bag. The Red Raider base runner was initially ruled safe, allowing the would-be tying run to score, but the reversed call ended the game and sealed a Cyclone victory.
Mikayla Ramos broke out of her slump in a big way with a 3-for-4 day at the plate that included two doubles and three RBIs. Angelina Allen (2-of-4, 2B, RBI) and Carli Spelhaug (2-of-4, 2 R, SB) also turned in multi-hit performances. Milaysia Ochoa homered for the fourth time this season and the 11th time of her career in the win.
Ellie Spelhaug (7-12) was the pitcher of record for the Cyclones after relieving Saya Swain in the second inning.
Texas Tech started fast with one run in the first and four runs in the second to take a quick 5-0 lead after two innings. After Texas Tech crossed another run in the third, Iowa State exploded for eight runs in the bottom half of the frame.
Allen got ISU on the board with a two-RBI double before Ochoa's two-run blast pulled ISU to within 6-4. Simpson and Mikayla Ramos also logged an RBI in the frame, while Kaylee Pond scored on a wild pitch and Skyler Ramos touched home after a Red Raider throwing error.
A Texas Tech run in the fourth brought the visitors back with one at 8-7, but Mikayla Ramos' second double of the game scored two insurance runs for ISU in the bottom of the fifth. The Red Raiders rallied in the seventh to cut ISU's advantage to 10-9 but Iowa State would hold on for the victory.
