DES MOINES, Iowa – Iowa State's Drake Relays kicked into gear on Thursday with the Cyclones putting up some strong performances on the track, with the steeplechasers standing out at Drake Stadium.
While the steeplechase win went to 2021 Olympic Trials fourth-place finisher Daniel Michalski, Gable Sieperda still stepped up to be the top collegian on the day, moving into second on the third lap and holding the position the whole way and finishing runner-up in 8:45.31. Kelvin Bungei also made it into the top-10 for ISU in ninth in 8:56.62 and Nate Mueller marked his collegiate steeplechase debut with a 9:10.61.
Sieperda's mark was the best among collegians and was the fastest by a collegian at the Drake Relays since Iowa State Letterwinners Club Hall of Famer Dmitry Drozdov ran an 8:39.66 to win in 1994.
Kiki Connell showed her continued progress in the women's steeplechase, as she clocked a big personal best of 10:39.31 to take second in section one of the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase. The freshman from Charles City also moved into ISU's all-time top-10 for the event at No. 8.
The unseeded men's 1,500m saw a couple of Iowans put up strong performances, with David Thompson (Lewis, Iowa native) using a big final 200 meters to take fourth in section 1 in a personal best 3:48.26. Joe Schaefer (Johnston native) was in 10th in the same section, just missing out on his PR in 3:50.47.
Zach Kraft continued his progression in the decathlon on Thursday. In his first decathlon at Arizona State three weeks ago, the second day proved his undoing as he did not record any points in three of the five events. Things went much better for him today at Drake, as he was able to get on the board in each event and finish with a 1,400-point improvement of 5,362 to finish in ninth. Among Kraft's highlights was a new personal best 134-4 (40.95m) in the javelin, and his first career clearances in the pole vault, finishing with a best of 10-10 (3.30m).
