OKLAHOMA CITY – Kasey Simpson's second walk-off sac fly in the last week lifted Iowa State (28-26, 6-12 Big 12) past Baylor (28-24, 6-12 Big 12), 2-1, in eight innings Thursday afternoon at USA Softball Hall of Fame Stadium. The Cyclones advance to the semifinals of the Big 12 Championship Friday at 1 p.m. against No. 1 Oklahoma.
ISU trailed, 1-0, entering the bottom of the seventh but managed to cross the tying run and force extra innings after Lea Nelson came home on a passed ball. A pair of singles by Angelina Allen and Milaysia Ochoa, followed by an Alesia Ranches walk, loaded the bases for Simpson with one out in the eighth. The senior then sent a fly ball into shallow right-center field to score the winning run.
Karlie Charles earned the starting nod in the circle for Iowa State and was outstanding, tossing five scoreless frames while striking out six with only one walk and four hits against her. Ellie Spelhaug (11-17) entered in relief and earned the win. Spelhaug pitched three innings, allowed three hits, struck out one and walked none.
Charles worked through some early trouble but was able to keep Baylor off the board by stranding base runners in scoring position in each of the first three innings. The pitchers exchanged zeros on the board until Baylor scraped across the first run of the game in the sixth inning. Aliyah Binford reached on a fielder's choice, stole second and third base before coming home on a Cyclone error.
Simpson led off the bottom of the seventh with an infield single to spark a Cyclone rally. Nelson entered to pinch run for Simpson and stole second, bringing the tying run into scoring position with no outs. Skyler Ramos drew a walk before a well-placed sacrifice bunt by Natalie Wellet moved the runners into scoring position.
Iowa State would tie the game on a passed ball, but left the winning run stranded on third, sending the game into extra innings.
Baylor threatened in the top of the eighth, but a fantastic throw home by Ramos in center field beat a Bear trying to score from second base and kept the game tied. With the bases loaded, Simpson's walk-off sac fly completed the comeback and sent the Cyclones into the semifinals.
