AMES, Iowa – Kaylee Pond and Carli Spelhaug have been named to the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-District 6 Softball First Team. The Academic All-District teams divide student-athletes into eight geographic districts across the United States and Canada.
This marks the fifth consecutive season Iowa State has had a representative on the All-District First Team and the seventh time in program history with two honorees.
Spelhaug was dependable from the lead-off spot for the Cyclones, averaging .324 with 12 doubles, three triples, six home runs and 19 RBIs during the regular season. The speedster stole 15 bases on 16 attempts, the 10th most in program history. Her .977 career stolen base percentage is tied for the second best among active Division I players. The Bettendorf, Iowa native scored 52 runs which were fifth in the Big 12 and tied her total form last year for the third most in a season in program history. She averages 1.06 runs per game, the 18th-best mark in the nation.
Pond turned in a .252 average with eight doubles, two triples and two home runs to go along with 16 RBIs during her redshirt freshman campaign. The Lafayette, Calif. native drew 27 walks, the fifth most in the Big 12, including nine across the final nine games of the regular season. Pond scored 22 runs on the year, swiped five bases and started 42 games at third base.
Off the diamond, Pond, a Journalism & Mass Communications major, was one of seven players in the Big 12 to record a 4.00 GPA this year. Spelhaug, registered a 3.90 GPA while studying Kinesiology & Health. The pair were also named to the Academic All-Big 12 First Team earlier this spring.
